Musing About Ministry: A New Kind of Hireling
http://musingaboutministry.blogspot.com/2010/12/new-kind-of-hireling.html
Friday, December 17, 2010. A New Kind of Hireling. A few days ago, Trevin Wax posted a very interesting question at his blog. Does getting paid make a difference in how you lead your church? I made me wonder if Trevin and I had wondered across some of the same material as I had recently read some things that caused me wonder about the same question. This is no way to shepherd a flock. Ironically this "working for free" makes you nothing more than a hireling. Connected to a call or to a congregati...I am ...

NFL Picks: October 2006
http://nflpickscontest.blogspot.com/2006_10_01_archive.html
Saturday, October 28, 2006. As the season nears the half-way mark, the games get easier to pick. Or so you would think. But our performance last week would seem to indicate otherwise. Hopefully, week 8 will bring great improvements. Here are some observations:. Solo Acts of Bravery. While a couple of games are picked by two contestants this week, there is only one that fits in this category, as Dave Samples. Pick of the Week. Thanks, as always, for being a part of the fun. Musing About Ministry: The Poor Innkeeper
http://musingaboutministry.blogspot.com/2010/12/poor-innkeeper.html
Monday, December 20, 2010. For the past few Sundays we have been looking over the shoulders of different characters in the Christmas story. What did they see, what did they feel, what did they know as Christ came into the world? We have looked at Mary, the angels of heaven, the shepherds and the wisemen. One character I have avoided has been the Innkeeper. At times I feel sorry for the Innkeeper. He seems to get worse treatment in the story than even Herod. John Phillips. Yet I have also heard it pointed...

NFL Picks: November 2006
http://nflpickscontest.blogspot.com/2006_11_01_archive.html
Wednesday, November 29, 2006. Well, we survived Thanksgiving week, and some of us (me, for example) are a bit worse for the wear. Actually, it was really only me that was greatly harmed; everyone else was above .500 for the week. Here's hoping this week is better. Some observations:. Solo Acts of Bravery. No doubt counting on a big day from Ocho Cinco. He had one last week) has picked the Bengals to upset the visiting Baltimore Ravens. Maybe if the Ravens bring the Browns' defense instead of their own.

NFL Picks: Week Seven Picks
http://nflpickscontest.blogspot.com/2006/10/week-seven-picks.html
Saturday, October 21, 2006. Again, my apologies for not getting this up earlier. I know it's tough to have time to find my mistakes when I don't get it posted until Saturday afternoon. I'll try to do better. Here are some week 7 observations:. Solo Acts of Bravery. There are three contestants who find themselves alone on a limb this week. "Tank" McPheeters went where even Tampa-area pastor Tom Bryant. Refused to tread, picking the lowly Buccaneers to upset Philadelphia. Pick of the Week. And picking the ...

NFL Picks: Week Twelve Picks
http://nflpickscontest.blogspot.com/2006/11/week-twelve-picks.html
Tuesday, November 21, 2006. Here are some observations on this week's picks:. For the most part, these are pretty obvious, and shouldn't produce any surprises, although I always allow for a meltdown by the Cowboys. We all picked the 'Boys, the Colts (at home against the McNabb-less Eagles; duh), the Chargers (powered by the new LT), and the Seahawks (against the hapless Packers). Solo Acts of Bravery. There are two of these to report this week, as admitted Redskins fan (no word on his " Hogette. Were in ...

Musing About Ministry: Thoughts on Acts 15
http://musingaboutministry.blogspot.com/2010/12/thoughts-on-acts-15.html
Thursday, December 23, 2010. Thoughts on Acts 15. Sounds like a Baptist church! Was the immediate response after we read the chapter in prayer meeting last night. Yes, it is true if you have been in church (Baptist or other) very long, conflict that grinds church life to a halt certainly can sound all too familiar. But there is a distinction here.this squabble mattered! The charge against the modern church will not be that we fight too much, but that we fight about the wrong things. Paul and Barnabas app...

Musing About Ministry: Things You Can Pray for Your Church -- Acts 15
http://musingaboutministry.blogspot.com/2010/12/things-you-can-pray-for-your-church.html
Thursday, December 23, 2010. Things You Can Pray for Your Church - Acts 15. 4 Things You Can Pray for Your Church This Week. 1 That in conflict, the church will listen more to the Holy Spirit than personal preferences. (v. 28). 2 That your church would have a healthy process to deal with inevitable conflict. (v. 2). 3 That your church will know what is worth fighting for and what isn't. (v. 11). 4 That even in unresolved conflict, grace will abound. (see final note below). Conflict in the church. Mark(ed...

Musing About Ministry: January 2009
http://musingaboutministry.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html
Wednesday, January 28, 2009. Some Political Thoughts.sort of. Since our quarterly business meeting didn't take very long this evening, I had. A few spare moments to fill. Below are some thoughts I shared with my congregations.only after we closed the business session! I have been disturbed by recent decisions and actions by the new Obama administration. This has caused me to examine my long held position as a political non activist. Should I have been taking a larger role as a cultural warrior? I am stil...
