The Vine Project is working closely with a number of schools at Primary, Junior and Secondary level in the township. These schools refer vulnerable children in need to us. They are often living alone or with distant relatives having lost their parents to aids. When we are not there the staff oversee our children and we are in constant email touch with them. Grannies

The Vine project helps grandmothers who are responsible for their own orphaned grandchildren. Using the traditional Zulu skill of bead making they have been encouraged to set themselves up as a co-operative. Everything is done according to the Fair Trade ethos. They meet every Friday to make their jewellery and at the same time support one another both emotionally and practically. The grannies are always looking for new ideas and recently began to think of small pouches.

In South Africa there is no welfare state to support children apart from grants, which often involves complex red tape. One grant that is the equivalent of our family allowance, and the Foster care Grant which can be paid to a relative or friend. Both require documentation which must be presented to a magistrate for approval. This whole system is daunting to a child and Social Welfare workers are overwhelmed with the magnitude of the problem.
