Downtown Deacon: April 2012
http://deacon-in-formation.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html
The wonderings of a deacon at an Episcopal Church in a southern city. Sunday, April 8, 2012. Genesis 7:1-5, 11-18, 8:6-18, 9:8-13. Exodus 14:10-31, 15:20-21. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. How is tonight different from all other nights? That’s the question that Jewish children were asking at Passover seders last night. It’s an equally good question for those of us gathered here this evening. Let’s start with the most obvious difference. It’s pretty dark in here. This i...

The wonderings of a deacon at an Episcopal Church in a southern city. Monday, May 30, 2011. Remembering with gratitude those who made the ultimate sacrifice and praying that we will study war no more. Gonna lay down my sword and shield. Down by the riverside. Down by the riverside. Down by the riverside. Gonna lay down my sword and shield. Down by the riverside. Ain't gonna study war no more. I ain't gonna study war no more,. I ain't gonna study war no more,. Study war no more. The wonderings of a deacon at an Episcopal Church in a southern city. Monday, December 17, 2012. Third Sunday of Advent. 3 Advent, Year C. December 16, 2012. In the name of the God who creates us, who redeems us, and who will never leave us alone. Today is the Third Sunday in Advent, otherwise known as Gaudete Sunday. The word “gaudete” is the Latin word for “rejoice,” the word that began our Epistle reading today. We note this Sunday of rejoicing in an otherwise solemn season by lighting a pink candle.

The wonderings of a deacon at an Episcopal Church in a southern city. Sunday, October 2, 2011. October 2, 2011. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. In today’s lesson from First Corinthians Paul writes, “For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles.”. I would suspect that many of us are happy about that. The joy of Easter is something to look back to and look forward to with gladness. When we prea...

The wonderings of a deacon at an Episcopal Church in a southern city. Sunday, September 23, 2012. 17th Sunday after Pentecost, Year B. James 3: 13-4:3, 7-8a. In the name of God, our creator, our redeemer, and our sustainer. It’s only the twenty-third of September, or on the church calendar, the Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost. The weather has just begun to cool off after our horrendously hot summer. Fall is definitely in the air. It makes me think about Santa Claus. You know the rest. Maybe you did too.

Downtown Deacon: Christ the King Sunday
http://deacon-in-formation.blogspot.com/2012/12/christ-king-sunday.html
The wonderings of a deacon at an Episcopal Church in a southern city. Monday, December 17, 2012. Christ the King Sunday. November 25, 2012. In the name of God, our Creator, our Redeemer, and our Sustainer. Today is the day in our church calendar when we celebrate Christ the King. Since we’re members of the Anglican family of churches, we Episcopalians are a bit more fascinated with kings than are members of other denominations. Not surprisingly, we’re especially intrigued by one king in particular:.

The wonderings of a deacon at an Episcopal Church in a southern city. Sunday, April 28, 2013. 5 Easter Year C. April 28, 2013. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. I invite you to imagine, if you will, that you’re sitting at the table with Jesus and the other disciples. You’re all in the upper room with the door shut, maybe even locked. The atmosphere is filled with fear, sadness, and tension. You’ve known for quite some time that your beloved teacher is in grave danger. You&#...

My fellow Episco-nerds may want to check out my friend Mick's new blog, Veritable Verger- see my bloglist. Before ordination, I served as verger at a couple of churches. I'll let Veritable Verger explain just what it is a verger does and why vergers add so much to the liturgy. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Beauty Tips for Ministers. Meditations on Money Management.

Sing, o barren one who did not bear; burst into song and shout, you who have not been in labor! For the children of the desolate woman will be more than the children of her that is married, says the lord. enlarge the site of your tent, and let the curtains of your habitations be stretched out; do not hold back; lengthen your cords and strengthen your stakes. for you will spread out to the right and to the left. and your decendants will settle the desolate towns. isaiah 54:1-3. January 6, 2017. Wrinkles on her cheeks. She sits in her lonely corner, all day long. She lives in a big house, with lots of people,. But no one makes her feel at home. She has no one to talk to,. She just has the cold frosty air surrounding her. She brought her sons up with at most care and love,. She prayed day and night for them to be successful at work. Her prayers did work, successful and proud they were,. But no one thanked her for her selfless efforts. It is as though she has forgotten how to talk.

A guide to teenage fiction. The Wide Wide World. This website is primarily intended as a resource for English teachers. It started as a list of young adult fiction compiled as part of my PGCE last year for English teachers looking for recommendations for teenage fiction to use in the classroom. I've categorised these by key stage and added links to useful resources, blogs and websites. There are also reading lists for A-level students to use for independent reading. Most of all, this website is a place t...
