professor-in-dalian: Bar of Babel
http://professor-in-dalian.blogspot.com/2015/03/bar-of-babel.html
An American professor blogs about his experiences in Dalian, China. Wednesday, March 4, 2015. I had an interesting experience on my way home from work today, the first day of the new semester. 8221; I was sufficiently impressed that I decided to reward this fastidious bar manager with a sale. I was even more impressed with her professionalism as I saw how she ran the bar. If I ever had a business that needed a manager, I would try to hire this woman. The Japanese guys clearly were regulars, and big spend...

professor-in-dalian: Lihai
http://professor-in-dalian.blogspot.com/2015/03/lihai.html
An American professor blogs about his experiences in Dalian, China. Sunday, March 22, 2015. This morning I took the dogs outside. When we got on the elevator, there was already a dog there, along with an old guy who looked like Wallace Shawn in The Princess Bride. (To be fair, an awful lot of old Chinese dudes look like Wallace Shawn in The Princess Bride.). The poodle hopped over and tried to get dominant with Mimi, till she went "Yipe! And grinned right back at him. When we reached ground floor, the ol...

professor-in-dalian: July 2014
http://professor-in-dalian.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
An American professor blogs about his experiences in Dalian, China. Sunday, July 20, 2014. Ma Lei on a tear! Oh, my wife! That mouth of hers is going to get her in trouble someday. She's awesome! Once when I was teaching a class of kindergarten students, on the very first day I walked down the front row chatting with them. The first one looked up at me and said “you are very tall! First I had the students come up with vocabulary words to test, along with a list of five or six “taboo” words...Name R...

professor-in-dalian: August 2014
http://professor-in-dalian.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
An American professor blogs about his experiences in Dalian, China. Saturday, August 9, 2014. In all those years shopping at Ikea, I never thought I'd be working there. No, I'm not wearing a blue shirt and driving a forklift, but I am working at Ikea now. Today I started a seven-week Business English class for ten or fifteen of their employees who already have pretty good English at the start. Chinese companies suck, but no worse than Chinese companies in the rest of China. A student in class today said ...

professor-in-dalian: January 2014
http://professor-in-dalian.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
An American professor blogs about his experiences in Dalian, China. Tuesday, January 14, 2014. Resting, at Last! People have an image of the leisurely life of a university professor, but that's at least outdated (if it ever was accurate). There are some periods of leisure, to be sure, but the year is punctuated with waves of work (marking papers, meeting writing deadlines, etc.). Nothing. No work at all. There's nothing to do, but your stressed-out brain can't quite believe it. So the rest of that day yo...

professor-in-dalian: The anti-corruption, pro-Xi juggernaut

An American professor blogs about his experiences in Dalian, China. Tuesday, December 23, 2014. The anti-corruption, pro-Xi juggernaut. Yet another kingpin going down in Xi Jinping's anti-corruption campaign. (A factional enemy of Xi Jinping's, of course.). professor-in-dalian: Heating in China
http://professor-in-dalian.blogspot.com/2014/11/heating-in-china.html
An American professor blogs about his experiences in Dalian, China. Friday, November 14, 2014. If the guy managed to escape down one of the tropical wormholes south of here, he could live on that for a while. But really, it's not much of an annuity for the entire rest of one's life. And if he doesn't manage to escape the country, he's going to find it was a very bad bargain. And also, he can never return to China. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Http:/ www.dalianxpat.com. professor-in-dalian: February 2015
http://professor-in-dalian.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
An American professor blogs about his experiences in Dalian, China. Tuesday, February 24, 2015. Now that we're finally back in the slightly more technologically-advanced world of the Development Zone (aka home), I was finally able to upload my movie-producing debut to YouTube. I think the results are okay, considering that it’s a first-time effort. Video processing is clearly SLOW work! Granted, our internet speed isn't that great, but wow! Editing the movie, by contrast, was lickety-split! Subscribe to:...

professor-in-dalian: April 2014
http://professor-in-dalian.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
An American professor blogs about his experiences in Dalian, China. Sunday, April 27, 2014. Early experience of Chinese traffic. This little event happened during my first week of car-ownership, when I was still learning to Drive Like the Tao (to be the topic of a future essay). It was Friday afternoon, and I was coming home from work down the back roads. As I approached the final left-turn before climbing the hill to my apartment complex, I got stuck in the following traffic jam. Followed by this car.

professor-in-dalian: Peccadillos and evils
http://professor-in-dalian.blogspot.com/2014/12/peccadillos-and-evils.html
An American professor blogs about his experiences in Dalian, China. Wednesday, December 10, 2014. Peccadillo is a wonderful word which gets used too frequently. It comes from Spanish, meaning "small sin" or "small error." "Pecado" means "sin," and the "illo" ending means "small.". Smoking in the elevator is a peccadillo. Forgetting to repay $5 to your buddy is a peccadillo. I don't believe there's an equivalent term in Chinese, but there definitely should be. Ie, when will China be a world leader? China ...
