Thinking Through My Lens

Thinking Through My Lens. It’s so easy to break a good habit, even after it has been well established. When I started this blog, I wrote daily for months on end. Of course, I did it because I knew if I stopped (and I was afraid to stop for even one day), I would have a hard time getting back on track. I guess I was right. This week, my friend and colleague Kevin posted a prompt on the NWP iAnthology. I could do that. It rained quite a bit on Monday, but it had stopped by the time I left work. Knowing...

Thinking Through My Lens. Weekly Photo Challenge: Weather or Not. We returned to school, deep in winter. Flurries of white (paper) mounded as students began their study of snow and inquiry into how to cut hexagonal snowflakes from a square piece of paper. Outside was cold by San Diego standards with students mostly in long pants and surfers in their full wetsuits. Our oft-promised rain actually materialized this week, giving us a full day cooped up inside the classroom. At UCSD, the fog rolled in wit...

Thinking Through My Lens. It’s there, a constant, even when I can’t see it, hanging out over my shoulder. It follows me around as it changes form, exerts its influences on the tides, and even becomes invisible. I looked up during my walk this afternoon, the sky was particularly blue as the sun shone brightly. This is really the first warm day we’ve had in a while. Tucked under the large palm, there it sat…not as bright as in the dark of night, but noticeable all the same. This entry was posted in clmooc.

Just another WordPress.com site. Building Bridges in the Garden. March 7, 2016. Everything Under the Sun. 8212; explorergarden @ 5:50 pm. Last year, students in the Cardiff School garden helped build a simple arch trellis out of rebar and hardware cloth to hold up four new passion fruit vines. I had read that it would take 3 years for the vines to produce fruit, so I figured the trellis was all we would need. We experimented with tension cables to see how they could work to hold up a load in a suspension...

It’s Coming… : #sol15. August 4, 2015. August is here. Can’t miss the change in the air, the chill at night. It’s midway point for NY/NJ teachers on vacation. I remember turning the calendar slowly, conflicted because conflicts aside,August is my favorite month of the year because it’s MY MONTH-. I staked my claim to it on August 7, 1949, that is, my mom grabbed it for me, as a gift to her favorite sister, Sally and since then she has graciously shared it with me and most years, my first call is to her.

July 13, 2015. Back to work last week, just dipping my toes into our 2015 Institute and one of our many YWP camps. On Thursday morning riding up to New Paltz in some very misty, foggy rain for most of the trip by the time I was exiting and moving on to the ramp the sun was overpowering the clouds and by the time I arrived at the Institute’s summer site, I didn’t need to grab my pink umbrella from the back seat. But I was up at the spot, gray buildings on either side of a large parking area. Civilizat...

Up and still unpacked. August 5, 2015. We are ready for adventure! What do I need? I fear leaving home something essential even though there are lots of stores in the town on Saratoga, right Tara? I know that without even checking. He has taken just the basics. Good thing he will not give me a hard time when I’m lugging down my overnight bag. I will be ready by 9 and off we go to check out Tara and Scott’s new home-away-from-home! I’m off…. This entry was posted in Uncategorized. And tagged Travel prep.

Thinking Through My Lens. Weekly Photo Challenge: Underfoot. As I walk along the shoreline, I can feel the grains of sand under my feet. Along some stretches the sand feels smooth, almost like quicksand where my heels sink in the sponginess of the saturated surface. The sandpipers see this place as their seaside restaurant, poking their long beaks deep into the sand for a meal. Sometimes that sand underfoot can be scooped up to create magnificent castles, complete with moats and and a seashell flag on top.

Thinking Through Our Fingers. Writing, to me, is simply thinking through my fingers. - Isaac Asimov. Monday, August 17, 2015. When Reading and Writing Don’t Mix. They say that in order to write well, you must read, read, and read some more. I agree with this. I mean, how can I not? Different, I need to save my reading time for after I’ve finished writing for the day. Novel in third person past as well.
