This Old Art Room

Meet the Teacher }. The Art Studio }. Thursday, May 28, 2015. For those of you still in school, here is a quick {40 Minutes} lesson on Peter Max I do with 4th Graders. {Side note - our 4th Grade Social Studies curriculum is all about Virginia and American History so this is a perfect culmination for the year}. I don't reveal the final image or the artist we are learning about until about half way through the class. I'm not kidding when I say the last 15 minutes or so will be dead silent. Which way is up?

This Old Art Room: NORTHWEST COAST STYLE BLOCK PRINTING

http://thisoldartroom.blogspot.com/2015/03/northwestcoast-style-block-printing.html

March 2, 2015. NORTHWEST COAST STYLE BLOCK PRINTING. These two color reduction block prints were created by my 7th graders. This was their first time with linoleum cutting and using registration blocks. This lesson was going on during Super Bowl week, and I enjoyed using the Seahawks logo as a current event element. Of course it was understood that by showing the logo, I was in no way going against my Patriots! A very interesting article on the legend of the logo was found here. Don't forget to give a qu...

This Old Art Room: 6th GRADE STONEHENGE

http://thisoldartroom.blogspot.com/2012/09/6th-grade-stonehenge.html

September 17, 2012. 6th Graders study prehistory in Social Studies. Last week I showed them images of Stonehenge and discussed the idea of prehistoric sculptures and structures. Then we created these silhouettes, putting a new spin on value scale paintings. I love this lesson on paint mixing and value, and it looks really lovely done in purple too. Some of the kids chose to tear their black paper to make the stone shapes. Elizabeth - Dream Painters. September 17, 2012 at 6:22 PM. July 11, 2014 at 9:40 PM.

This Old Art Room: ROUND TRIP ~ Which Way is Up?

http://thisoldartroom.blogspot.com/2015/05/which-way-is-up.html

May 25, 2015. ROUND TRIP Which Way is Up? Today I'm sharing a 6th grade two- forty minute -class lesson on negative and positive space; a lesson I do right before introducing the black and red style of Greek pottery. The materials for this lesson are minimal: black and white construction paper cut to the same size {ours are 12x18}, scissors, glue sticks, black and white markers. I used the Sharpie white pens but unfortunately they aren't as strong by the end of the year! Begin by drawing a skyline in the...

This Old Art Room: April 2015

http://thisoldartroom.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

April 11, 2015. SEEKING THE FACE OF GOD. As I end my Easter vacation, I thought it was fitting to share these Kindergarten paintings of our Lord. These beautiful paintings were done in one class period. To save a bit of time we used tan construction paper as our base. Mixing the skin tone would have taken another class. Students were given a few tips, like placement and size of eyes, and how to 'double dip' their paintbrushes for the hair, but for the most part this was a free painting session. Use Your ...

Tuesday, December 30, 2014. The What If Game. So there's this game I play.  I don't really like it,  but I am quite good at it.  I'm sure you're familiar with it too. It is called the "What If" Game. You never really volunteer to pay this game.  It just happens to you. and it is about as easy to end as Jumanji. Btw, if you have any tips for avoiding/minimizing this game,  I'm all ears. What if it hadn't woke him? What if I had to do cpr? What if I didn't do it right? What if it happens again? Yeah, yeah&...

Friday, July 18, 2014. What's in a name? Before school got out.before I even had the gender revealing ultrasound.I asked my students what they thought I should name our baby and why. I wasn't really looking for their input, just curious what their little six-year-old minds would come up with. You know, kids say the darndest things! I was surprised at how reasonable most of their selections were. Here are the lists I got:. I answered that we liked to cook and read and watch movies. Was his third question.

KinderCoaster: Labor Day

http://kindercoaster.blogspot.com/2014/11/labor-day.html

Wednesday, November 5, 2014. So I'm talking about October 10.not the first Monday in September. Most people love the September Labor Day because it means they get a nice long weekend. For me it always marks the beginning of going back to work for another year. And as much as I love my job, I hate that day. October Labor Day from now on will be far superior. It marks the day James decided to come meet us. Is today the day? I immediately reached for my phone and started the contraction timer app. I quickly...

Monday, March 31, 2014. Start with a Dot. Have you read this book? I typically read it every year to my kids because I love the message. And I like to pair it with an exploratory art lesson with water color paints. In case you are not familiar, let me give you a little retelling. Vashti is not an artist. At least that's what she thinks. She doesn't believe in herself. So she does. She jabs her paper, leaving a tiny little dot in the center of the page. "There! Vashti is a bit puzzled. I use this book as ...

Sunday, June 10, 2012. Grown from seed: Tomatoes. Sometime in February we started vegetable seeds. We picked-up a seed sowing schedule from our local garden store, City Floral. And for the most part we've followed the recommendations. Matthew strung a grow light above a table in our basement and I sowed seeds in our starter trays. First up- tomatoes. For Matthew's birthday Emma and I gave him water walls. See our water walls with my little helper in the pic above. The first fruit on Mondo tomato. She che...

This Old Aunt Quilts

This Old Aunt Quilts. Wednesday, August 27, 2014. What I've been doing. This is a table runner that I made last week. It was really easy to make. I have had the pattern and fabrics to make it for a couple of years so thought it was time to make it. I have also made this table runner for my coffee table. It was made out of a jelly roll. I really enjoyed making it. I now have to quilt and bind both these table runners. This is my aunt with her son, myself and another aunt of mine. Friday, February 14, 2014.
