Thoughts from Thomas T. Thomas

Thoughts from Thomas T. Thomas. Sunday, August 16, 2015. Markets ’R’ Us. In this manner, like the impersonal forces of evolution, the market is an equal opportunity creator and destroyer. Nobody has a favored position. Nobody gets a free pass for life. Risk, reward, and retribution are distributed impartially—although, of course, that doesn’t keep people from trying to game the system. People are just so pesky! Now I am not such a Pollyanna about economics that I don’t see flaws in the system of op...

Thoughts from Thomas T. Thomas: May 2015

http://www.thoughtsfromthomastthomas.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Thoughts from Thomas T. Thomas. Sunday, May 31, 2015. We are all concerned about the violent reaction of Islamic communities when westerners attempt to draw the likeness of Mohammad: the riots attending the Jyllands-Posten. Cartoons in Denmark, the massacre at Charlie Hebdo. In Paris, and now the backfired assault on the cartoon event in Garland, Texas. Evidently, fundamentalist Muslims completely lose their temper and their sense of proportion when the prophet is criticized or even depicted. But the one...

Thoughts from Thomas T. Thomas: October 2014

http://www.thoughtsfromthomastthomas.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Thoughts from Thomas T. Thomas. Sunday, October 26, 2014. I also took a course with my mentor, Philip Klass, about predicting the future, and this was more grist for my science fiction imagination. We read from noted futurists like Alvin Toffler and historians and economists like Robert Heilbroner. We studied probability. We learned about trend analysis and about the danger of relying too heavily on current trends. But the character’s personal history, upbringing, education, and even his or her per...

Thoughts from Thomas T. Thomas. Sunday, August 31, 2014. The Best of Times. Some years ago I shared my thoughts on the difference between traditional publishing on paper and the new approach to publishing with electronic books. Amazon.com will win. Maybe not this round. Maybe not this year or next. But in the long run, because the economics of modern publishing are on Amazon’s side. For new authors and those with a previous publishing history that does not rise to bestseller status,. The new author no lo...

Thoughts from Thomas T. Thomas: Building Our World

http://www.thoughtsfromthomastthomas.blogspot.com/2015/07/building-our-world.html

Thoughts from Thomas T. Thomas. Sunday, July 12, 2015. Five years ago, in a meditation on the speed with which our technological base is expanding,. I wrote the following:. But that’s not quite accurate, is it? In a cave called Divje Babe in Slovenia, paleontologists have found a 43,000-year-old fragment of a bear femur with holes drilled for a flute. Debate continues whether this was a Homo neanderthalensis. And I don’t think I was wrong about the speed with which this industrial adaptation has ac...

Thoughts from Thomas T. Thomas: The Risk-Transfer Society

http://www.thoughtsfromthomastthomas.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-risk-transfer-society.html

Thoughts from Thomas T. Thomas. Sunday, July 19, 2015. I’ve written before about why I don’t believe this country is actually headed for a Marxist-style socialist government, with aggressive nationalization of various industries, such as the British undertook in the post-war period. But this is not just the action of a “ laissez-majesté. Rdquo; government. Our entire society has become a game of risk transfer and rent seeking. Which allows landlords to take a rental property off the housing market withou...

Thoughts from Thinking Horses

Thoughts from Thinking Horses. Sunday, June 20, 2010. I quickly stand up in the knee deep water. The horse I had just been on top of, JJ, a chestnut Arab gelding, about 15 hands tall, is looking down his long nose, his ears and eyes asking “what are you doing down there? I was able to see a further learning opportunity that I hadn’t planned. Being flexible or being able to change what we are doing when we see a chance to, is a very important skill in teaching horses. For that matter, the ab...Starting On...

A Few of My Favourite Things. Tuesday, 14 June 2011. The End of Relay. It is a sad time when I have to write about my last Relay conference. I really wish it didn't have to end. For those of you who don't know Relay is a 10 month training and discipleship programme run by UCCF:The Christian Unions for recent graduates. I am now in my tenth and final month and have just returned from Relay 3 (the final conference). So without further-a-do here is my End of Year Relay Presentation. Sit back and enjoy.

Thoughts from Town's End

Thoughts from Town's End. Sunday, November 2, 2008. Why it might be impossible to fix Education with Dollars. A short while ago, I had a fairly interesting discussion about Education policy reform with two people who were fairly qualified to discuss it.  It brought up some questions and certainly changed my admittedly idealistic perspective on how we can help our students suck less. And only 11% of that on Education. It's not hard to see why. . But after my discussion, I'm not so sure. Which, thanks to t...

Tuesday, May 28, 2013. May 23, 2013. We are so proud of him and the good work and service he gave to the people in the Missouri, St. Louis Mission. Welcome home! I am so thankful that our family had the time to just enjoy being together and listen to Nathan's mission experiences. What a great week we have had! Tuesday, May 21, 2013. Nathan's room clean out! We have been using Nathan's room for random storage while he's been on his mission. It was time to de-junk! Now Nathan has a place to sleep. Yay!
