Monday, 22 June 2015. One day last week I decided to go out and see if I could find one of the UK’s rarer butterflies…the WOOD WHITE. Leptidea sinapis).a UK priority species, as this extract taken from the UK Butterflies website explains. I knew that some had been seen in a wood in the south of Northamptonshire, about an hours drive from home. To see what I could find. Three Counties Herald: August 2014

http://threecountiesherald.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 6 August 2014. Master Po to young Caine; Do you hear the grasshopper that is at your feet? Young Caine; old man, how is it that you hear these things? Master Po; young man, how is it that you do not? Quote from the 1970’s cult t.v. series Kung Fu (I’m showing my age now! Not only have I been listening to the grasshoppers I decided to photograph a few too. Grasshoppers belong to the order Orthoptera (grasshoppers and crickets). An early nymph…no wings have developed yet. Chorthippus albomargina...

Three Counties Herald: AS LOW AS A SNAKE’S BELLY…

http://threecountiesherald.blogspot.com/2015/03/as-low-as-snakes-belly.html

Sunday, 15 March 2015. AS LOW AS A SNAKE’S BELLY…. 8230;Yep, that’s how low I had to get when I went out and about for a couple of days last week looking to photograph some Moss, Lichen and, as it turned out, some rather special Fungus. I’m still not up to speed on the many different types of moss but I think this is Broom Fork-moss. Many species of moss are ‘fruiting’ at this time of year where they throw up long stalks (seta) topped by strikingly colourful seed capsules (sporangium). Looking for moss a...

Three Counties Herald: September 2014

http://threecountiesherald.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 24 September 2014. Over the past few weeks I’ve spent several days out and about looking to see what fungi I could find. It’s probably a bit early yet but I did manage to find a few. However, for the most part, they had already been ‘found’ and nibbled by the slugs and squirrels, so not many pristine examples. Ampulloclitocybe clavipes) A flat topped fungus with a distinctive club shaped stem. Grows to around 7cm tall with a brown cap of about 8cm across in deciduous and mixed woodland. Hygroc...

Caldecotte Lake: April 2015

http://caldecottelake.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Personal musings, wanderings and sightings from around the lake. A little history, and about the lake, at the bottom of the page. Sometimes the picture doesn't have to be perfect; it's the captured moment that counts. Tuesday, 28 April 2015. Wheatear, Common Sandpiper, Yellow Wagtail and Mandarin Duck. After the Yellow Wagtails yesterday, Trevor. Came over early this morning in the hope of seeing them. He wasn't disappointed. A few pictures, and then we were surprised to find a Wheatear. And a Grey Heron.

Visions Through The Lens. A photographer's vision of the natural world. Wednesday, April 30, 2008. Photo quote for today: "Let us first say what photography is not. A photograph is not a painting, a poem, a symphony, a dance. It is not just a pretty picture, not an excercise in contortionist techniques and sheer print quality. It is or should be a significant document, a penetrating statement, which can be described in a very simple term - selectivity." -Berenice Abbott. How does one standout in a crowd?
