Three Months in Palestine

Three Months in Palestine. Thursday, December 15, 2005. I'm leaving Palestine on Saturday to return to America. The other day, I met for the last time with a group of high school senior girls from the village of Kharbatha Beni Hareth. The last class, they surprised me with a "lunch," which was more like a feast. They each brought a dish: maqlouba, mousakhen, pizza, salad . Will you remember us in five years, one of them asked me. Yes, I promised. I will. Posted by Bob at 6:16 AM. Posted by Bob at 5:56 AM.

Three Months in Palestine: Have you heard the latest news?

http://threemonthsinpalestine.blogspot.com/2005/12/have-you-heard-latest-news.html

Three Months in Palestine. Tuesday, December 06, 2005. Have you heard the latest news? I climbed aboard a yellow Ford van in the parking lot outside Birzeit University to head back to Ramallah and struck up a conversation with the driver. He spoke English quite well he had lived in Chicago, Las Vegas and San Diego but I insisted on speaking Arabic. The conversation turned, as it almost always does, to what am I doing here learning Arabic. I’m a journalist, I told him. Oh, have you heard the latest news?

Three Months in Palestine: October 2005

http://threemonthsinpalestine.blogspot.com/2005_10_01_archive.html

Three Months in Palestine. Tuesday, October 25, 2005. Which means forbidden by Islam. His son invited me to his engagement party, next month, and gave me a ride home. Posted by Bob at 1:05 AM. Monday, October 24, 2005. Posted by Bob at 3:47 AM. Posted by Bob at 3:28 AM. In Palestine, cars will brake or even stop in a busy street to yield for pedestrians. Even so, they rarely honk. I asked Sameer, my colloquial Arabic professor, why. I’ll tell you why, he said, because of the Israeli occupation. Wearing s...

Three Months in Palestine: A lifetime

http://threemonthsinpalestine.blogspot.com/2005/11/lifetime.html

Three Months in Palestine. Wednesday, November 23, 2005. I met a woman the other day who said she was 104 years old. She lives alone in a one-room stone house in a village called Khirbet Abu Falah, in the Palestinian highlands north of Ramallah. The house, with its distinctive Ottoman-style vaulted ceiling, is older than she is. She is hard of hearing and spoke in a peasant dialect so distinctive that even my Palestinian friends had trouble understanding her. She didn’t say much anyway. Nineteen years la...

Three months in Iraq

Three months in Iraq. An account of my three months living in the International Zone in Baghdad, Iraq. Saturday, October 14, 2006. The Lay of the Land. First off, let me apologize to all for the abject lack of blogging since I got here. The fault is my own, a combination of trying to juggle an enormous number of commitments and of being rendered almost unable to describe the things I've seen and experienced in the last month. The only building in our compound with overhead protection (OHP) that will stan...

Three Months In Moresby | A 90 day mission to PNG

Three Months In Moresby. A 90 day mission to PNG. December 1, 2010. Nearly three months ago, I began this blog as a way of keeping in touch with people while I have been away. It was also a bit of a test for me, a way of seeing what it takes to produce a blog. And now, after over 10,000 words and more than 90 images in 40 posts, it’s over. Well, almost. This is my last night in Haus 41. Then tomorrow I am in the hotel. I fly out Friday, just in time for a mad weekend in Canberra. What you don’t see in th...
