The Observatory

Friday, January 23, 2009. I Hope I'm Wrong About This. Of course we'll explain to them before we get there that we expect them to be on their best behavior. But my children don't seem to be able to understand what best behavior. The Observatory: A Trip to the Redbox

http://www.timothyyoung.blogspot.com/2007/11/sun-went-down-fifteen-minutes-before.html

Tuesday, November 20, 2007. A Trip to the Redbox. The handicapped stalls never gave him that kind of trouble. He could always spot them from a good 20 feet off ‘cause of their blue lines. But those dang fake out stalls were always such a let down. He hadn’t ever heard of anyone actually getting a ticket for parking in one, but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t. Isn’t that the way things usually worked out? Not any guys that Hank new. Six people, but they were only going to make four purchases. If each one...

The Observatory: Brush With Bigotry

http://www.timothyyoung.blogspot.com/2008/09/racial-bigotry.html

Friday, September 19, 2008. A few weeks back I had a mild taste of what it feels like to be on the receiving end of racial discrimination. My car had a flat tire, so I took it in to get fixed. The first shop I took it to couldn't help me. They told me that although the tire was flat because of a nail, its tread was too worn for them to repair it; and they couldn't replace it because they didn't have a replacement in stock. They suggested I check a used tire store. I may have waited five minutes, or it mi...

The Observatory: My Children's Cultural Awareness

http://www.timothyyoung.blogspot.com/2008/09/my-childrens-cultural-awareness.html

Sunday, September 7, 2008. My Children's Cultural Awareness. Awareness of the principal elements that combine to form's one's native culture is an important element in a child's social development. So when I was left home to take care of the kids while my wife spent the evening watching her kid brother play football I decided to take advantage of the opportunity and treat my two oldest kids to an in-home viewing of one of the cinematic classics of contemporary American culture- Star Wars. So, for the sam...

The Observatory: My Daughter's Pictures

http://www.timothyyoung.blogspot.com/2007/08/my-daughters-pictures.html

Saturday, August 11, 2007. I came home the other day and saw a stack of pictures sitting in the kitchen that my 4 year old daughter had drawn. At the risk of sounding like a gloating parent, I have to say that I was quite impressed with what she had drawn. Have a look. I asked her about them. She said, "This grandma (right) wants a grandma (left).". When I asked about this one she said, "He's frowning because his friends don't want to play with him.". November 30, 2007 at 1:39 PM. You write very well.

The Therd Person: September 2008

http://therdperson.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html

Friday, September 26, 2008. I can’t get Fred off my mind. Not because I think he’s as funny as his legions of ten-year-old fans do, but because he, or rather Lucas Cruikshank- the 14-year-old boy who created him- has enough raw flimmaking talent and understanding of how to entertain his peers that his short movies have attracted literally nearly a hundred million viewers. Charming, isn't he? Because he has managed to do what has been so elusive for the film and television industry- create a successful pr...

The Therd Person: January 2009

http://therdperson.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

Friday, January 16, 2009. I've created a little bit of a dilemma for myself. I did it by reading King's Dragon. By Kate Elliot. It's a great book. It's a well-written high fantasy with realistic characters that takes place in a medievalish world that's presented with heaps of detail. (In fact, the sheer quantity of detail that Elliot pours into this world may prove to be the Achilles heel of this book for some readers.). Links to this post. These were the questions the image of the Mr. Burns cyborg l...

The Therd Person: October 2008

http://therdperson.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html

Tuesday, October 21, 2008. Neil Gaiman has been referred to as a "rockstar of the literary world". People call his stories "remarkable". If you've spent much time perusing the fantasy section of your local bookstore or Amazon.com you're sure to have come across at least a few of his titles. I decided to sample one of his books a few years back with his well-reviewed American Gods. Also, American Gods. So I stopped reading, er, listening to it. And liked it. And I watched Stardust. That And I kept hearing...

Bells and Whistles: Ohiopyle

http://somethingsclever.blogspot.com/2015/08/ohiopyle.html

Wednesday, August 5, 2015. We went and explored some of our new state finally with Lindsay Anne and her family. We camped at Ohiopyle State Park and we had an awesome time! I convinced Jethro to go in and swim! We hadn't put on swimming suits at this point, so the kids all got in in various states of dress/undress. Then we got to the real good stuff. The natural waterslides area. We took it easy at first, which was great- the kids loved it and were not intimidated. Whooop- where'd he go? It was so so fun!

Bells and Whistles: April 2015

http://somethingsclever.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Thursday, April 30, 2015. Just a lil' ol' facebook status. I thought for three months now that one of our boxes from Switzerland had been lost (or stolen) on it's way here- the one with our computer in it, with FIVE YEARS WORTH of PICTURES on it! Crying such happy, grateful tears. So happy. Sooooooo happy. Sunday, April 26, 2015. WHY didn't we take out the hard drive with my pictures on it and carry it WITH us the entire way? Holy cow do I ever wish though that I had finished blogging about our trip to C...

Bells and Whistles: Best Surprise Ever!

http://somethingsclever.blogspot.com/2015/08/best-surprise-ever.html

Tuesday, August 4, 2015. So once upon a time, Lindsay Anne, my sister-in-law was awesome enough to come visit me! I was sooooo happy and excited! AND THEN- she brought along my sister Lindsay and her family! Well, Lindsay and Sterling were on their way from Lindsay Anne's house to their own house in Miami, and at the VERY last second they decided to come see me! Because they are awesome! It was the BEST surprise ever! Wyatt and Will were BEST friends! At least, we told them they were a lot.). Happening a...

Bells and Whistles: March 2015

http://somethingsclever.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Thursday, March 26, 2015. These pictures are out of order- they're from the day before we left for PA. It was a gorgeous, no-coat kind of February day in Utah. Orrin still talks about Jack Jack all the time. Best friends! And Natty -I love that girl! These boys know how to ride! And these are some pictures of Wyatt I took back then that I don't think ever got posted. And maybe it's just the hair being combed or something, but it's strangely as if he looks a year older in just two months? One day I overhe...

Bells and Whistles: February 2015

http://somethingsclever.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Monday, February 23, 2015. So here I am in my new house in Pennsylvania. Which house I love. A lot. The next day Brett and I and Brett's dad loaded up the u-pack ABF truck. After hauling box after box of books into the truck, Brett's dad said, "Well if the power ever goes out you can burn your books and stay warm." Ha ha. Hooray- we were a family again finally! AND, I think I'll call that good for today. Thursday, February 5, 2015. He couldn't stop looking at the huge flock of birds. Yes- it really was w...

February Bookshelf: The Rise of Nine, UnPHILtered, More Artemis Fowl. March 4, 2015. In my continuing effort to read more books this year, I give you my February Bookshelf post (a few days late). February didn’t feature anything that I felt was as profound as January. And there is less here to recommend unfortunately but they can’t all be winners. The Rise of Nine. 8211; Rating 2/5.
