約在二百多年前，由福建、廣東兩地移民來此中國人日多，因雙溪環境而取名為「雙溪口」。於1895年日治時稱為「雙溪口區」，至1920年地方制度更改廢區置庄，改為「溪口庄」。直至1945年才將「溪口庄」改為「溪口鄉」。 本鄉之行政區域在日治初期隸屬嘉義縣打貓支廳，1920年溪口庄隸屬台南州嘉義郡，同時將溪口區轄之西庄部落改隸新港庄，而將新港庄轄之柴林腳及大埤庄轄之游厝等兩大部落歸併本庄，共轄十大部落劃分為二十保。直至1945年將原有二十保併設十四村，隸屬 嘉義縣. 訂閱： 文章 (Atom).

1661年鄭成功，開台灣府，設一府二縣，府名東都承天府(今台南市)，二縣在北為天興縣（嘉義縣），在南為萬年縣。大埔鄉屬天興縣。1664年，改東都為東寧，升天興縣為州。1683年清治在台置台置台灣府，下設鳳山、台灣、諸羅（今嘉義）三縣，諸羅縣所轄自新港溪以北皆屬之。1723年諸羅縣割虎溪以北分設彰化縣、淡水廳，時所轄南至新港溪，北至尾溪，東至大武巒山，西至大海。1787年諸羅縣改為嘉義縣。1887年台灣建省，嘉義縣割牛稱溪及石圭溪以北添設雲林縣。1895年日治之初，設嘉義支廳，隸台灣縣。後廢台灣縣，改隸台灣政支部，設嘉義出張所。1896年...1945年改州為縣，改郡為區，嘉義、東石二區仍隸台南縣，嘉義市則改省轄市。1950年，調整行政區劃，以嘉義市及嘉義、東石二區設置嘉義縣。 大埔鄉. 訂閱： 文章 (Atom).
