Travels with Emma

Marching American Avocets, Lower Klamath Basin NWR. Wednesday, August 5, 2015. Will I be finding a new bird ‘heaven’? They were fine with that request, so yesterday Sue, Emma, and I headed south on a little investigation.  Sue was familiar with the refuge and told me we would have gorgeous views of Mount Shasta along the way.  Well, thanks to the fires in California and Oregon, this was the kind of weather we encountered… smoke filled skies. . 160; I think Mount Shasta is somewhere in the distance. Travels with Emma: Mini vacation to Rocky Point

http://travels-with-emma.blogspot.com/2015/08/mini-vacation-to-rocky-point.html

Borrego Springs, CA. Tuesday, August 4, 2015. Mini vacation to Rocky Point. Yesterday morning Emma and I headed out in the car for the 175 mile drive to Rocky Point, OR, to visit Sue. And Mo.  They had invited us to stay in the cabin on their property there during my three days off this week. . I figured we’d just visit for the first afternoon after arrival, but Sue had something else in mind.  Remember when I had my first ever try at kayaking for 15 minutes at Imperial NWR last winter? At times, I strug...

Travels with Emma: A different view of the beach

http://travels-with-emma.blogspot.com/2015/05/a-different-view-of-beach.html

Borrego Springs, CA. Thursday, May 21, 2015. A different view of the beach. On Wednesday mornings, most of the volunteers at Harris Beach State Park and two other close by parks meet for breakfast at Mattie’s Pancake House in Brookings.  I may be a volunteer for the Federal Fish and Wildlife Service, but I’m stationed at an Oregon State Park, so I decided to participate.  I don’t think I’ve eaten out for breakfast since 2008! If you look to the left from the railing you can see the water filling in betwe...

Travels with Emma: Settling in, and a trip back to California

http://travels-with-emma.blogspot.com/2015/05/settling-in-and-trip-back-to-california.html

Borrego Springs, CA. Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Settling in, and a trip back to California. 160; $40 total, and that was for the tripod.  The rest including the satellite dish, 50 mile travel time, and labor was covered by my service agreement. . When the sun finally made an appearance this afternoon in Brookings, I decided a little road trip was in order, so I headed south back into California.  After about 25 miles, I found myself at the headquarters for Redwood National Park. When I wasn’t looking u...

Travels with Emma: First day ‘on the job’

http://travels-with-emma.blogspot.com/2015/05/first-day-on-job.html

Borrego Springs, CA. Saturday, May 16, 2015. First day ‘on the job’. Set up my station at 8:30 this morning for my first five hour shift as wildlife interpreter.  All the other volunteers at this Oregon state park refer to me as the Bird Lady.  Where have I heard that before? Remember this picture from yesterday when I showed you where I’ll be set up? Believe it or not, I spotted a grey whale on my first day! From my perch, I can also enjoy all the folks that come to the beach.  Some come to con...People...

Adventures of a Vagabond Volunteer. Sunday, May 31, 2015. Snow Shall Not Stop the Egg Tendors. Saturday, May 16. Following the milking of the eggs and milt from grayling yesterday, the fish guys set up this year's nursery early this morning. It is at Elk Springs where we have the purest water and consists of two sets of 5 linked 5 gallon buckets, connected with piping so the spring water can wash over the eggs and give them maximum oxygen. Volunteer Dick, ready to leave. View at the end of the road.

Adventures of a Vagabond Volunteer: Oh, This Place, This Place

http://mkircus2.blogspot.com/2015/08/oh-this-place-this-place.html

Adventures of a Vagabond Volunteer. Wednesday, August 5, 2015. Oh, This Place, This Place. The landscapes here are amazing; even though I look at the same features almost every day, they are always different. Friday, July 10, we had lots of storms around and lots of leftover clouds, which made for beautiful light all day. I could not stop taking landscape pictures. Many of the are from that Friday, but others are ones I've captured in the two summers I've volunteered here. Looking across Elk Springs Creek.

Adventures of a Vagabond Volunteer: Norris Geyser Basin in Two Lights

http://mkircus2.blogspot.com/2015/07/norris-geyser-basin-in-two-lights.html

Adventures of a Vagabond Volunteer. Wednesday, July 29, 2015. Norris Geyser Basin in Two Lights. I am always impacted by light and loved seeing some of the same geysers in different lights. And it was also really nice to practically have the basin to myself the first time. And people were definitely getting less in number as the day waned during our second visit. Some of the boardwalks were closed the first visit but open about a week later for the second visit which allowed us to see all the features.

Adventures of a Vagabond Volunteer. Monday, February 23, 2015. Krewe of Barkus and Meoux Parade. I forgot to set this up to run last Sunday. Currently postponing my next adventures due to icy mist and cold. But I'll be camping at three different state parks this week. I multitasked Sunday afternoon, February 14, and got in a walk as well as taking in a parade. I thought the pet parade might be fun to watch and was not disappointed. All the young at heart had a good time. Two of the ferrets. Willett and g...

Life In A Volkswagen Bus. The Good Life in a Small Home on Wheels. Tuesday, July 8, 2014. Much Catching Up to Do. Am at a small state park campground, Coyote Creek, in Northern New Mexico. It is cooler here than down south. I am camping with a friend, Jennifer, who has her own van, a red Dodge Caravan. The Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas NM. Las Vegas NM is overshadowed by its Nevada cousin and namesake. But it is an interesting town with a bloody wild-west shoot-em-up heritage second to none. The town ...Met u...
