Two for Tonga

Map of Tonga in the South Pacific. Saturday, September 29, 2012. We have crossed another item off our "Things we must do before we leave Tonga" list. We visited Vava'u. This island group is to the north of Tongatapu and Ha'apai. Although we planned on one week, it was extended by two days due to a plane cancellation. Not to worry! An extra two days in Vava'u? The view from our porch at Mystic Sands Resort. Don, Hakau Adventures, showed us islands, beaches, and where to snorkel. A view of Neiafu's harbor.

Two for Tonga: December 2011

http://twofortonga.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html

Map of Tonga in the South Pacific. Wednesday, December 14, 2011. In a far, far galaxy. (or, same same, but different). In other words, a Sunday School Christmas Program is pretty much the same here as in any church we've ever been to. We were invited to attend a program at an Anglican church. There was a Christmas tree and decorations, joyous Christmas music, earnest children presenting the message, and anxious adults directing them. And it was in English! In a corner on the stage. Preteens sing and dance.

Two for Tonga: May 2012

http://twofortonga.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html

Map of Tonga in the South Pacific. Saturday, May 26, 2012. At the same time as the King's funeral we had an opportunity to house sit for a Peace Corps staff member who was taking a trip out of Tonga. Wow, we thought: a real kitchen, air conditioning in the bedroom, TV (We never turned it on.), hot showers, and a washer and a dryer. What Peace Corps Volunteer would pass that up? Sione thwacking coconuts with a bush knife to feed the pigs. Pigs snorting, grunting, and squealing in the yard. When the King's...

Two for Tonga: November 2011

http://twofortonga.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html

Map of Tonga in the South Pacific. Monday, November 28, 2011. Let's have some fun! Last week exams were over and the days became unstructured and long. Why not have some fun? Our principal decided we’d have some sport competitions. The day before all the students, from class 1 to form 2, were divided into 4 groups and told to wear white, red, yellow, or blue shirts the next day. Some of the red teammates getting ready to compete. The blue and white teams running relays. Always time for rugby! There are t...

http://twofortonga.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

Map of Tonga in the South Pacific. Saturday, January 28, 2012. Veimau or Tongan Checkers. One of Jim's counterparts from TIST and TIST students plays draughts under the mango tree. Jim gets beat playing draughts at the market. 8 x8) checkerboard, 12 checkers each side, checkers placed so the long diagonal of the squares used runs from lower left to upper right. Can only move forward (as in standard checkers), BUT can jump. Forwards and backwards. Jumps must. A few moves later red jumps three. Called flyi...

I don't like the cold desert wind. I do like warm tropical breezes. The Peace Corps said "life is calling" and asked "how far will you go? Tonga", I answered. Monday, March 21, 2011. I'm a big fan of Tonga. Without skipping a Tongan beat to reply, I say 'malo' and silently say to self " show me the way to the spit roasted pig.". After all, a respectable feast must have at least one roasted puaka. Ofa lahi to the bride and groom. I'm a big fan. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Im a big fan ...

The other day, I got a lift from one of my co-workers, a young man in his mid 20's. He's a genuinely nice person and as I asked if I could get a ride to do an errand, he replied, "You don't need to ask. Just get in, David.". What a beautiful way to learn a language. The Big Top hits Tongatapu! Not sure, other than his popularity with the kids. The reason for ample time is that you could only get into the concession area. We weren't admitted to the big tent until about 6:30. Bruno is a merchandiser. (And a sailor, I learned, as the big tent and all travel by boat.). A Samoan midget of Asia...

When you work, what is your job? I’ve learned that things are not always intended to go ‘my way’. I’ve no count of the times I’ve asked myself, “Why has this happened? Just give me patience!
