Cross-Sections of 3D Cell Model. One of my favorite ongoing projects at GalaxyGoo. It's satisfying for me, as both an intellectual exercise and artistic activity. With my understanding of the cell (yes, I remember all that stuff from bio classes), I construct a 3D model with colorful clay. For my talk at FOTB 2007, I wanted to walk the audience through developing an algorithm. Since fractals are so wonderful, I picked a very simple example and started exploring it: the development of a fractal leaf or tree. In this version, I'm just showing an extremely simple fractal. At each generation, we split the previous branch and add a red dot to mark the end-point. Click on stage to generate each iteration.

In this version, I've used the vertices discovered in earlier versions to define the shape of the leaf as it grows. I've also moved the starting point, so that the leaf has a stem. My first exploration of the Periodic Table of Element, with Flash, a few years ago. I keep coming back to it. In this version, when the elements get near their position in the periodic table, they stick. Eventually, if you let this run long enough, the whole table will form. But when the table completes, the elements fall and the table formation starts over.

In this piece I'm working out a way to randomly select one of the four corners of a square, and rotate it around that pivot point. The red dot helps me quickly visualize which corner is the pivot point. Why bother with all this? Property is relative to the registration point. If we position the inner sprite correctly, when we animate the container sprite's rotation it looks as though it's rotating around our fake registration point. In this piece, I'm playing with a few different things at once. The Cell class in this piece assigns a random corner (to be the pivot point) and then draws and positions the graphics based on the corner's offset, before passing it through targetParent.addChild(thisCell). Rotation direction is also based on this corner position. This is all to get around the current problem, of not being able to reset the registration point of a movie clip at run time. The goal of this piece is to create an illusion; that a block of color is sliced into smaller and smaller squares.
