Vegetable Vagabond: July 2014

http://vegetablevagabond.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Sowing seeds and putting down roots. Friday, July 25, 2014. The most uncivilised time in human history is now…. This man from Thailand has found an easy way to live, after spending 7 years living the hard way. It is so simple, so much how I feel, I want to hug him! No need for me to say more as he says it all, even about saving seeds! I feel like I know this man. Links to this post. Tuesday, July 22, 2014. Cream of the Crop Vegetable Gardens. Vegetable Vagabond: August 2014

http://vegetablevagabond.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Sowing seeds and putting down roots. Thursday, August 21, 2014. More than just a garden…. This story is evolving as I write. She had found a little house by the sea and decided she wanted to stay…. forever. It soothes your soul by the sea and she had become quite fond of us at the community garden and some others in a craft group she had joined. But I suspect the best present will be seeing the faces of friends she has already made and knowing that they will help her settle in and adapt to her new life.

Vegetable Vagabond: Getting on with “things”

http://vegetablevagabond.blogspot.com/2015/08/getting-on-with-things.html

Sowing seeds and putting down roots. Friday, August 7, 2015. Getting on with “things”. I must get up and get on with things….I must light the fire / have breakfast / wash the dishes / feed the chooks then get on with things…. I must leave this phone call and get on with things ….That’s enough time spent having lunch, it is time to get on with things…. I have caught myself saying these kinds of things recently but why is it that what I am already doing is not considered one of the “things”? Recently a wom...

Vegetable Vagabond: What has happened to our expectations to grow food?

http://vegetablevagabond.blogspot.com/2015/05/what-has-happened-to-our-expectations.html

Sowing seeds and putting down roots. Friday, May 8, 2015. What has happened to our expectations to grow food? Interestingly, growing food has become a middle-class activity, seen as something you do in your spare time, after you have bought all the accoutrements that modern-day food gardeners seem to “need” such as raised garden beds and soil (as though the soil in the ground is not good enough these days! What gets me, and this does not include people who because of their health or lack of garden space,...

GARDENERS' GASTRONOMY: September 2012

http://gardenersgastronomy.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html

Friday, 28 September 2012. Buckwheat Pancakes with hot, buttered walnuts. In Adelaide I used to love going to The Pancake Kitchen, which was open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It is still there and not much has changed, which is wonderful because some of their concoctions are superb. This was always one of my favourites, and is called “It” because it is the ultimate! 1 cup buckwheat flour. 188; cup 85% flour. 2 tsp baking powder. 2 tbsp raw /demerara sugar. 2 eggs, lightly beaten. 189; cup milk. GARDENERS' GASTRONOMY: Gerda's Redcurrant Flan

http://gardenersgastronomy.blogspot.com/2015/08/gerdas-redcurrant-flan.html

Sunday, 9 August 2015. This recipe is from a dear, elderly, Austrian woman named Gerda. Measurements and wording are all her own…. I can hear her reciting it to me, in the beautiful way she spoke…. Prepare a pastry with two ounces sugar, four ounces butter and six ounces flour, a few drops of lemon juice and line a buttered and floured flan tin with this. Bake 'blind'. When baked, but still hot, cover thickly with red-currants, sprinkle with a little sugar. Pile the whipped egg white over redcurrants.

GARDENERS' GASTRONOMY: August 2013

http://gardenersgastronomy.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 14 August 2013. Wild Weed and Leaves Pesto Dip. 100g toasted pine nuts or other nuts (you may use up to 20% seeds. Don’t use more or the mixture changes texture and becomes gluggy, especially with sunflower seeds). 1 large garlic clove, peeled and crushed. A handful of grated mature cheddar or Parmesan or a combination. A large handful of tasty greens, including chickweed, dandelion, self-sown rocket, baby kale, herbs, mizuna etc as above. A good olive oil (probably about ½ cup).

GARDENERS' GASTRONOMY: June 2013

http://gardenersgastronomy.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 11 June 2013. When you assemble this cake it seems to be all lumps of pear and hardly any cake but when it is cooked, the pears and the batter become one delicious cake. You may like to add some chopped nuts to it or even some orange blossom water but I rarely do. I have been making this cake for about 25 years and it disappears so fast I never seem to get a photo! Heat oven to 180C. Juice of 2 lemons. 2 cups 85% or. 1 cup white flour. 1 cup wholemeal flour. 1 Tbl baking powder.

Saturday, August 1, 2015. The Robber and I have been treating ourselves to what I think this is at Cafe Venecia in Palo Alto for the last few years- I'll admit this recipe is the reason I saved any of the Italian newspapers in the first place. Serves 4 or more, depending on serving size. 1/3 C unsweetened cocoa powder. 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon. 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg. 1 1/2 C whole milk. 1 1/2 C heavy cream. 4 large egg yolks.

I eat vegetables every day. I try to eat a lot of them. Here's where the fallen vegetable heroes come to be displayed. Monday, November 26, 2012. It's been way too long since I've shared a recipe here. This morning I waited a bit too long before making breakfast, but was determined to have something really delicious, savoury, and nourishing. I threw this together. Goblin is one of my favourite words, so here's a friggin' homage to that. 1 small sweet potato (according to science, the most satiating food!
