View from the Studio

View from the Studio. Wednesday, April 22, 2015. Leigh Werrell, Bettina Nelson and Mary Putman at Gross McCleaf Gallery. Beware the Bear, by Leigh Werrell. Leigh Werrell's paintings and Bettina Nelson's collages share the show's title of "A Likely Story," one of those clever word plays that has an ironic as well as earnest reading. Likely stories abound, and the seeking is a large part of the fun. It is why I write these occasional blog reviews. Leigh Werrell's paintings authentically and originally trac...

View from the Studio: Man and Meaning: Dick Ranck, Painter and Sculptor

http://viewfromthestudio.blogspot.com/2014/02/man-and-meaning-dick-ranck-painter-and.html

View from the Studio. Tuesday, February 11, 2014. Man and Meaning: Dick Ranck, Painter and Sculptor. There is a painting in this show that Dick began by looking at a photograph of the cave paintings in. The work of Gauguin has to come up in looking at these, and you realize that Gauguin was intuiting abstraction in his own way. Dick Ranck paints with less distraction by an exotic region across the Pacific. His wilderness is the woods of. His abstraction the sky and what the mind plays out of it, or on it.

View from the Studio. Saturday, October 24, 2009. The Sleep of Reason and other oracles of art. The sleep of reason was the condition Goya named as beginning the grotesqueries and nightmares he witnessed in his extraordinary book of etchings called. Slaughter of the Innocents. It may well be that when all are subjective, when all are in the thrall of some cruel insanity of belief-based hatred, that the subjective response is one of reclaiming reason, reclaiming the objective state. Who can see this w...

http://viewfromthestudio.blogspot.com/2014/12/civilized-discourse.html

View from the Studio. Wednesday, December 10, 2014. Oil on panel, 7 x 9 in. There is a light to civilization as well as a darkness. We forget in our critique of empires that what they protect and preserve comes from a sense of the good life. A highly recommended show. View from the Studio. Saturday, January 18, 2014. Bewildered: the paintings of Anne Harris. The dishevelment need not be strictly early am It can be a return from a party, in front of the mirror before going out, dressed up but not up to it. It is the moment inside the pit of the stomach, subjective, aware, undisguisable. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Lynne Campbell's paintings and John Sevcik's paintings. Links to blogs I like. View from the Studio. Monday, January 11, 2010. Life and the City. Michael Bartmann next to one of his paintings. His method of layering paint creates enigmatic distances punctuated by scratchings, scrapings, or thickly applied pigment. Amid the overall earth tone of these powerful yet quiet pieces there is a nice sense of color work, which leads one toward the light of day in some area of the painting. Until January 31, 2010. When you search for something on Google, at the upper right in the light blue bar there’s a note of the number of results Google found and how long it took them to process your search.
