Saturday, 14 June 2014. I have just returned home after my first attempt at being a SOTA activator (goat). Yesterday, I spent quite a long time carefully packing my kit in preparation for the trip. We awoke before sunrise and SWAMBO and I hit the road early, we arrived at our destination with some time to spare. In fact on the way I stopped to survey yet another summit: GP-002 on the way. Activated 21 September 2014. This was my second activation of Mt Vinegar with much better weather this time around compared with my first activation of this summit back on 2 June 2013. As soon as the FT-817 was set up, my first contact on 40 metres was an S2S with Rod VK2TWR on VK2/ST-020 and then worked a steady stream of chasers until my last contact with Amanda VK3FQSO. Big mountain, small voice, many ears. TCF does RD — homebrew 7MHz SSB superhet. Last weekend was a contest double-bill with the Remembrance Day and Lighthouse contests. I listened for a few hours Sunday late morning on the MST400 and my TCF/ Super-VXO. Receiver strip, now with replacement audio stage using a TDA7052. Instead of the prescribed LM380. TCF-receiver-strip — SA612 mixer, 8.867MHz IF filter, SA612 product detector, TL072 op amp, 2N2222 BFO. With a 10MHz IF and 3MHz VFO, which sounds sweet.
