Occasional SOTA and Microwave operation. Protective case for FT817. Built a k6bez antenna analyser →. Vk6/sw-036 An activation in two parts. Part 1 – Saturday. Having flown early to Perth to catch up with friends and family before the rest of the family arrived I had a chance for some activations. A walk back down the entrance road to the hair pin seem sufficient by my GPS to be out of the activation zone. Woke up Sunday morning to having a feeling something was on my neck only to find a dead tick. Oh.

Occasional SOTA and Microwave operation. Protective case for FT817 →. Having spent the months since the JMFD reducing the number of oscillators in my 23cm transverter to the intended number, it was time to test it out during the vhf/uhf field day. I had made one sketchy contact with vk3er over 170km, with the other side doing all the work with a 2m dish. Hopefully with less oscillations and pointing the antenna in the right direction, the results would be better. A quick contact on 2m in the contest to q...

First Portable (ish) HF Antenna. January 28, 2014. I have always been a sucker for the sound and nature of HF radio. The hollow, distant and sometimes ethereal voices always seemed to be travelling a very long way. More so on a hot summers night somewhere in the outback. Arrived in Kalbarri and the first couple of days were filled with...

Amateur Radio, SotA, Camping. Radio At The Park. September 9, 2014. The VK6 SoTA programme has started and thanks goes out to everyone who made it possible. Anxious to get started, I thought a trip up to Mt Dale on my day off would be a great beginning. I have been here a few times before, once camping and a few other times chasing thunderstorms. At one time I would have said that I knew the way through the hills like the back of my hand … but it’s been a while. After an initial flurry of contacts on 40m...

https://vk2io.wordpress.com/2015/07/04/roving-for-winter-field-day-and-sota-june-2015
Roving for Winter Field Day and SOTA – June 2015. Field Days provide a great opportunity to get out and operate portable, and combining that with SOTA is very attractive. In Winter the SOTA bonus kicks in for those 1200m peaks making it irresistible. Planned 3 summits in the first 24 hrs for this trip allowing entry as a Rover station in the VHF-UHF Field Day. Another 4 summits on my to-do list also followed. Summits activated during the trip and APRS track between them. This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Amateur Radio, SotA, Camping. Almost There →. May 6, 2014. Weather and other factors finally conspired to allow me to work on my portable dipole. The tune on it went way out on 40m after the top section of the squid pole snapped. A quick consult with an old friend and it was suggested that ground effect plays a larger part in dipole function than I was aware. He suggested shortening the legs if the dipole by up to a metre! The next part will be tuning the links. Thanks to Chris, VK6FDKR, for the chat🙂.

Amateur Radio, SotA, Camping. First SOTA Contact →. VK3YT’s Web SDR. February 25, 2014. I live in WA, have an ‘F’ call, am interested in Summits on The Air and we appear to be experiencing one of the biggest nulls on 40m in recent history. This does not mean that I need to miss out. I recently discovered a Software Driven Radio (actually 4) that can be driven via a web user interface in Melbourne. From here I have been able to enjoy listening to SOTA pileups. The Shack of VK3JED
The Shack of VK3JED. Friday, June 27, 2014. I have previously blogged about the state of rig control and remote base software, where much of it is proprietary. It is often said that if you don't like what's out there, go write your own. But that's not so easier for a non prorammer. However, I do have many years experience running IRLP nodes and reflectors and hacking in general with BASH shell scripts under Linux and Mac OS X. Rebel Base provides the following features:.
