WATCHING FOR ROCKS Travels of a Sharp-Eyed Geologist

OUT THE DOOR AND DOWN THE ROAD. Tuesday, July 28, 2015. Beyond the Caldera – Back to the Beartooths. In 2011, I spent barely 30 minutes crawling around a patch of outcrops on the road to Lulu Pass. In 2012, I took eight hours to drive the 64 miles across it, stopping to take a picture approximately every 30 feet. In 2013, I slept overnight in a dimly lit motel room on it, on top of the world. Island Lake, Beartooth Plateau. Beartooth Loop National Recreation Trail. Friday, June 26, 2015. Anywhere. Ca...

WATCHING FOR ROCKS Travels of a Sharp-Eyed Geologist: Winter Road Tripping – Lost Palms Oasis

http://www.watchingforrocks.com/2015/01/winter-road-tripping-lost-palms-oasis.html

Saturday, January 31, 2015. Winter Road Tripping – Lost Palms Oasis. In the waning hours of my two–week “ 2014 Winter SoCal Adventure. 8221; last month, fate offered up a gorgeous southern California Christmas Eve Day hike. Barely 20 miles up the interstate from my condo in Indio, I found exactly what I was looking for once more in the fan palm oases of Joshua Tree National Park. The previous day, my first hike in the Park was to the oasis in Forty Nine Palms canyon (you can read about that adventure here.

Saturday, February 28, 2015. Wild Weather on the Wildcat Canyon Trail. Generally, “February” and “Wildcat Canyon” are not words you hear in the same sentence around southwest Utah, except for maybe in this sentiment: “ Wildcat Canyon? You can’t hike there in February. There’s too much snow! 8221; Or perhaps in this little nugget: “ Wildcat Canyon? On the Kolob Terrace road? You need a snowmobile to get up there! No snow on the Kolob Terrace Road in February? WATCHING FOR ROCKS Travels of a Sharp-Eyed Geologist: Can’t Get Enough of Canyonlands

http://www.watchingforrocks.com/2015/04/cant-get-enough-of-canyonlands.html

Sunday, April 19, 2015. Can’t Get Enough of Canyonlands. Shafer trail takes off near Island in the Sky visitor center - La Sal Mountains in distance. Time gets away from us, though. Life happens. I don’t know what took me so long to return, but I knew that I wanted to reconnect with my old friends once again. I also hoped to hike in Canyonlands, if only for a few hours. With all that in mind, I chose a weekend to invite myself and made it happen. In the Island in the Sky area of Canyonlands, we hiked acr...

WATCHING FOR ROCKS Travels of a Sharp-Eyed Geologist: To Ski…Or Not To Ski?

http://www.watchingforrocks.com/2015/03/to-skior-not-to-ski.html

Monday, March 23, 2015. To Ski…Or Not To Ski? Sunset Point, Bryce Canyon National Park. We arrive at the Inn and try to check in three and a half hours early. The desk clerk very politely but firmly informs us that this is impossible since our adjoining rooms (with a requested connecting door! Are not ready. He calmly explains that check–in is at 4pm but that we might be able to check in at 2:30. Could we come back in a couple of hours? We are in no hurry. The dining room and a leisurely lunch beckon.

Liberty and justice for all. Friday, October 24, 2014. Too thick to be shamed. In the Oval Office! All the wingnut chicken littles who've been fanning fear of ebola are probably too out of their minds with cowardice to notice that Obama's message to them is:. I'm not only smarter, calmer, and better informed, I'm much braver than you crybabies. We used to say, "The stupid, it burns." Evidently not. I wish it did, but it wishes and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all be Fox "News" personalities. I remember...

A little space for me to think out loud about Life's twists and turns. Join me as I roam the home, here in Ohio and off in the wilds of Wyoming. A little space for me to think out loud about Life's twists and turns. Join me as I roam the home, here in Ohio and off in the wilds of Wyoming. "Nobody cares how much you know, until they know how much you care." President Theodore Roosevelt. Saturday, June 9, 2012. Rangering and Sewing . . . Two of my favorite things. On the rangering front, things are going really well. Our new staffers are really getting the hang of things, their programs are working well, and all is good. (Kinda scary, that! Another...

lovable liberal: Business failures

http://lovable-liberal.blogspot.com/2014/10/business-failures.html

Liberty and justice for all. Wednesday, October 15, 2014. Businesses and business people frequently think of themselves as rationally self-interested. They used to add the word enlightened. But they don't much any more. That's so retro, an anachronism of a time before shareholder value became everything, before greed was good, before Ayn Rand told them they were virtuous to be bastards. But, are they even rationally self-interested? The stock market has done tremendously during the Obama administration, ...

Liberty and justice for all. Friday, September 5, 2014. Radical Christian extremist ISIS. Phil Robertson is the moral equivalent of ISIS tyrant Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Robertson quotes Proverbs. All who hate me love death.". His choice for Muslims is the same choice that ISIS has posed to Yazidis (and doesn't even offer to Shias): Convert (to my extremist religion) or die. In fact, Robertson thinks it's too late even for conversion. "That time has come and gone," he says. Posted by lovable liberal. Of cour...

http://lovable-liberal.blogspot.com/2007/07/how-did-we-get-here.html

Liberty and justice for all. Sunday, July 22, 2007. How did we get here? In 1978, there was talk of electing a veto-proof Democratic Congress because the President was too conservative. That President was a Democrat, Jimmy Carter. Are you kidding me! How did we get here? I see four reasons:. Republicans concluded that their program of government. Their most potent political weapon and the unifying attribute of their political coalition - social class. The media gave up. The voters turned down. This was a...

Liberty and justice for all. Saturday, January 19, 2008. Laughing the pretenders out of town. Leaves three guys who might just possibly win the Republican nomination, and they're a scary trio. One is an open theocrat and Confederate sympathizer. One will clearly and obviously say anything. In the whole damn world to win - no, scratch that, it's worse, he'll say everything. At one time or another if that will save the best for numero uno. A 2000-year-old human-written book is never wrong. The apocalypse&#...

Thoughts on Christianity, Education and Life. Asymp; 1 Comment. Time flies regardless of how much fun we are having. True, it seems to fly by faster when we are having fun or doing the things we enjoy, but in reality, time flies regardless of how we perceive its passing. Does anyone ever wonder what happens to the New Year’s Babies we make so much. Asymp; Leave a comment. 8221; It is a song about the eschatological hope of the believer. Watching for the Magic Hour. A former creative-writer who still has shit to say, except it's no longer lyrical or purposeful. Sunday, May 23, 2010. Bob Schneider's "40 Dogs (Like Romeo and Juliet)" has been my favorite song these past couple of weeks. We're like Romeo and Juliet, like 40 dogs, cigarettes, like good times that haven't happened yet but will.
