Yankee Alpha Foxtrot Bravo: I'm Sorry, Dave. I'm Afraid I Can't Do That (Me and Autopilots)

Yankee Alpha Foxtrot Bravo. July 06, 2015. I'm Sorry, Dave. I'm Afraid I Can't Do That (Me and Autopilots). Somewhere over the Central Valley. I get an unexpected extra day off work over the 4th of July weekend, so I do a sobering but weirdly-pleasant IFR-in-VMC flight on my own to Stockton (KSCK), where I do the ILS RWY 29R with the missed as published, all hand-flown (for fun! Yankee Alpha Foxtrot Bravo: Just Another Bay Tour
http://yafb.ylayali.com/2015/04/just-another-bay-tour.html
Yankee Alpha Foxtrot Bravo. April 18, 2015. Just Another Bay Tour. We get back in and head over towards Livermore (KLVK), doing a fly-by of Crockett (she has connections there), and doing a bunch of touch-and-goes at Livermore (because I can…) before returning via a detour over the Altamont windfarm and back over the hills to Hayward. She's converted. She asks a lot of good questions about flying procedures (why did you fly at that specific altitude? How do you approach an airport? Just another Bay Tour?

Yankee Alpha Foxtrot Bravo: Recalculating... At The Next Cloud, Turn Left
http://yafb.ylayali.com/2015/03/recalculating-at-next-cloud-turn-left.html
Yankee Alpha Foxtrot Bravo. March 23, 2015. Recalculating. At The Next Cloud, Turn Left. I recently mentioned to a techie work colleague that the planes I fly typically have GPS. He was quite surprised that airplanes used GPS, and stood there and said in a very authentic GPS voice "recalculating… at the next cloud, turn left! Which amused us both, probably for rather different reasons. (he may well end up flying with me sometime soon). So what do I remember of the flight? Ron Rapp's House Of Rapp.

Yankee Alpha Foxtrot Bravo: The Way We Were
http://yafb.ylayali.com/2014/04/the-way-we-were.html
Yankee Alpha Foxtrot Bravo. April 26, 2014. The Way We Were. I can't help it: the image in the previous post. Of the cockpit instrumentation (including my iPad) I now take for granted made me go back to my original flying diary to find this image of 12R's panel back when I was learning to fly. Not exactly state of the art even then, but still, a pretty representative Cessna 172 panel from the late 1990's (12R's panel might even still. Look like this for all I know). 1:24 PM, April 26, 2014. Yankee Alpha ...

Yankee Alpha Foxtrot Bravo: Night Flight
http://yafb.ylayali.com/2014/10/night-flight.html
Yankee Alpha Foxtrot Bravo. October 28, 2014. Or something while curled up on the floor. No one's ever done that yet, but that possibility is something I always keep in mind when I size someone up before taking them flying. I guess we've both passed this test. JT's yet another acquaintance of mine willing to brave a flight with me, and here she is, climbing into the club. I know who you are! After the impromptu 360's we fly on up and out over a dark-looking San Pablo Bay and back down over Richmond, Berk...

Yankee Alpha Foxtrot Bravo: 800 Feet Above The Nimitz
http://yafb.ylayali.com/2004/04/800-feet-above-nimitz.html
Yankee Alpha Foxtrot Bravo. April 03, 2004. 800 Feet Above The Nimitz. I’ve been avoiding this for years, but here I am. As we pass through 800 feet over the Nimitz. My instructor John Ewing makes me don what I’m quickly coming to think of as the Cone Of Stupidity. Then tells me to turn to heading 340 and climb to 1,800’. Simultaneously Oakland Tower hands me off to NorCal Approach on 120.9. Piece of cake. Many pilots will tell you it's the hardest thing they've done), and it takes a lot of time and effo...

Yankee Alpha Foxtrot Bravo: "I Didn't Know It Would Be THIS AWESOME!!"

Yankee Alpha Foxtrot Bravo. March 29, 2015. I Didn't Know It Would Be THIS AWESOME! My little five-year-old nephew Simon looks at me from the back seat of one of the club. S DA-40s and says loudly into his headset mic "WOW! I didn't know it would be THIS AWESOME! 8212; but this is the first time for Simon, and I was worried he wouldn't like it (he's been a lot more apprehensive than Alex about doing things like this — Alex has always just plowed straight in…). As with Alex's first time. What a great post...

Yankee Alpha Foxtrot Bravo: Taking A Four-Year-Old Flying
http://yafb.ylayali.com/2011/04/taking-four-year-old-flying.html
Yankee Alpha Foxtrot Bravo. April 03, 2011. Taking A Four-Year-Old Flying. So here we are couple of years later at the run-up area off Oakland's runway 27R, and he's strapped into a child's car seat in the back of another 172 at Oakland. This time we're going flying. I've spent much of the past year or so wondering about the logistics of taking a small child flying ( I flew a seven-year-old around a few years ago. I needn't have worried, of course….
