Wide Blue World: Dispatches

Tuesday, August 4, 2015. Minimalism is not Perfection. I finally got around to visiting some of the small galleries in my neighborhood this past Saturday. It was fun. I saw some art and commerce and had nice interaction, especially a surprise conversation about Eastern Europe with the insightful Latvian-American who turns out to be my neighbor. She proceeded to explain to me that minimalism was just reducing something until it could be reduced no farther, a stripping bare. 8217;s definition of perfection:.

Wide Blue World: Dispatches: Ideas for The Movement: 16 Days For Peace and Freedom

http://www.wideblueworld-dispatches.blogspot.com/2015/06/ideas-for-movement-16-days-for-peace.html

Monday, June 29, 2015. Ideas for The Movement: 16 Days For Peace and Freedom. Se You mustn’t feel like a martyr. You’ve got to enjoy it.”. 8212;I.F. Stone. Legendary muckracking journalist Izzy Stone. Was suspicious of anything branded a “movement,” but I’m drawn to this phrase, this idea, by a piece in the 2014 New York Times The Lives They Lived. One of the posthumous profiles was of Yuri Kochiyama, a WWII internee at the Jerome camp. So…where does that leave me? 16 Days for Peace and Freedom. Spans Ju...

Friday, July 3, 2015. You’ll have to stay tuned for the next podcast to learn a fuller interpretation of my new apartment on the main street of Texas (er…Marfa). But for now: I’ve engaged a good apartment for a good price for a few months while I figure out what I’m doing. It’s the antithesis of Camp Dirtroad Backstreet—not better or worse, but the necessary next step to being settled. Here are some pictures to get us started. Empanoramacize the above photo here. Wide Blue World: Dispatches: Fordite

http://www.wideblueworld-dispatches.blogspot.com/2015/05/fordite.html

Sunday, May 3, 2015. Or, Happy Birthday to me. I have long had this on my list:. Not that ring in particular, but a ring featuring Fordite. And so I found my favorite on Etsy and ordered it. Well, concrete arrows. Who makes beautiful jewelry out of it. I confess that I might not love it so much if it were called Chevy-ite or Buick-ite (altho' Pontiac-ite is appealing). But I'm a Ford gal, so Fordite strikes a chord- although the raw material was ubiquitous and had nothing specific to do with Ford.

Wide Blue World: Dispatches: The Island of Disasters

http://www.wideblueworld-dispatches.blogspot.com/2015/06/the-island-of-disasters.html

Saturday, June 6, 2015. The Island of Disasters. My last morning in Iceland I happened to have coffee with a native named Olafur. Somewhere deep into our conversation, I asked him if every generation of Icelanders had their own disaster. He laughed and said no, then proceeded to tell a story that proved him wrong. For me, Eyjafjallaj. Ö kull was a fun word to learn how to say in the news of the spring of 2010. For millions of travelers, Eyjafjallaj. To Olafur, though, Eyjafjallaj. Iceland is small and tr...

http://wideblueworld-daily.blogspot.com/2015/08/august-14-2015.html

August 14, 2015. Normally I come home from my long Mimm's Ranch walk and make my lunch and spend my afternoon working on novel or podcast or cleaning my bathroom (favorite avoidance technique) etc. I just now got home and looked at what I have on my task list for this afternoon: lunch out and a haircut. It isn't even the first page of the world. But the blog wants to flower, like a flower. It knows that much. It wants to open itself,. Like the door of a little temple,. So that you might step inside and be cooled and refreshed,. And less yourself than part of everything. November 25, 2015 at 6:12 AM.

Wide Blue World: Finds: Sprouts

http://wideblueworld-finds.blogspot.com/2015/08/sprouts.html

Thursday, August 13, 2015. As I've unpacked my boxes from storage, some of which I've been apart from for over a year, I've found some wonderful things: a pretty shoulder bag I've never used, my favorite winter scarves, reliable kitchen tools. I bought my sprouting jar a hundred years ago (ok, maybe fifteen), that summer I worked at Bryce Canyon. I don't guess I've ever used it as much since. I remember going hiking and taking sandwiches dressed with sprouts: egg salad, hummus, cheese.

Wide Blue World: The Movement: My Traffic Stop

http://wideblueworld-themovement.blogspot.com/2015/07/my-traffic-stop.html

Friday, July 24, 2015. Early this morning, around 2:00 am, I was pulled over by a deputy Sheriff on a lonely stretch of highway as I was driving home from a volunteer gig at a music festival in our neighboring town. I was not surprised to be stopped: our deputies are known to be, ahem, very active. Turns out I had a tail light out. And I worried about a contentious interaction. Turns out we simply had a pleasant conversation about my tail light. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Wide Blue World: Finds: The Beauty and the Horror

http://wideblueworld-finds.blogspot.com/2015/08/the-beauty-and-horror.html

Saturday, August 1, 2015. The Beauty and the Horror. I just watched on Netflix-in-the-mail a recent documentary from Wim Wenders called The Salt of the Earth. I should start with a disclosure that I would watch Wenders film the phone book. It's so good. It's so good and so hard, so painful and so inspirational. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
