A very pleasant green island, not too many tourists and those that were there were mainly from other European countries like Poland, Sweden, France and Germany with not too many Brits. The musings of a southern naturalist up north. Welcome to my world. . Tuesday, 16 July 2013. Three traps in a week! The highlights among the rest were two Large Clover Case-bearer, six Elachista atricomella. Three each of Lobesia abscisana. Three each of White Satin and Double Lobed, 15 Silky Wainscot and two Blackneck. The two species are Black-vented Shearwater and Pink-footed Shearwater both of which were identified in very small numbers by others on the boat. I have posted similar shots of confusion species to illustrate the differences. Black-vented Shearwater Puffinus opisthomelas. Pink-footed Shearwater Puffinus creatopus. Flesh-footed Shearwater Puffinus carneipes. Sooty Shearwater Puffinus griseus. Gates - Windmill Farm.

During a brief walk on Saturday at Pilmoor I noticed several larval tubes consisting of bundles of grass stems on various low vegetation. I found five in total and took a couple of poor photos which were just about good enough for me to find which species they were on the internet. It turned out that they were a micromoth Psyche casta. So, off to that old favourite, Pilmoor, on the old railway line, and in four hours trapping managed a very creditable total of 300 moths of 20 species. No real surprises, the majority of the moths were Diurnea fagella. A common birch-feeder, a few Orthosias, and a handful of Eriocrania. Sp, but did include one of my favourite spring moths, a Streamer. Water Carpet - f. piceata. Links to this post.

By far the commonest moth that was attracted to light in Zante was a pyralid. And found some that really resembled my pictures and not only that were present in Greece which was encouraging. The DBS was picked up in Bristol and returned to Boroughbridge.unfortunately due to the M1 closure just had to take the long way round via Manchester. As much as a huge pleasure it was to drive, I cannot help thinking that a six litre V12 engine probably has contributed to the extinction of several species on this journey alone! Links to this post.
