The Tall Birder: October 2016
http://tallbirder.blogspot.com/2016_10_01_archive.html
Saturday, 29 October 2016. Pit 60 etc: Saturday 29th October. There seemed no point in an early start on this dark, dank morning! Badger also confirmed its absence, so I made an abrupt change of plan and headed off to Standlake - once out I could really just turn round and go back home, could I? Arriving in due course at a deserted Langley Lane hide at Pit 60, a very grey scene presented itself. But almost immediately some colour in the form of a Kingfisher. There were about 75 of them, plus the Black.

The Tall Birder: Stow-on-the-Wold 31 December 2016
http://tallbirder.blogspot.com/2017/01/stow-on-wold-31-december-2016.html
Sunday, 1 January 2017. Stow-on-the-Wold 31 December 2016. Given all the other recent accounts of trips by Oxon's keenest birders, it seemed high time that I also headed to Stow-on-the-Wold, although for me it was nearly an hour's drive away. As Stow is also elevated, sure enough it was a pretty dull and misty there as well. Dreadful light for photography! Not good. But remarkably within less than five minutes, it was clear that it had been seen again as a large herd of birders rushed (stampeded? Clearly...

The Tall Birder: May 2016
http://tallbirder.blogspot.com/2016_05_01_archive.html
Sunday, 29 May 2016. Oxon dragonfly mini tour: 28 May. For all the latest dragonfly news in the county, click here. The forecast for today had been changing all week gradually for the better, so it seemed high time for a tour of some of the current Oxfordshire hot spots for dragonflies. With reports of two emerging Club-tails. And one Blue-tailed Damselfly. With at least twenty present. Returning to the bridge, there still seemed no sign of anything and so I decided to cut my losses and head elsewhere...

The Tall Birder: Pit 60: December 10th am
http://tallbirder.blogspot.com/2016/12/pit-60-december-10th-am.html
Saturday, 10 December 2016. Pit 60: December 10th am. Despite the rotten forecast today, the Langley Lane hide seemed the place to start so that if the forecast rain arrived it wouldn't be too problematic. Arriving around 08:30 I was faced with a particularly bleak, grey and uninspiring scene! The light was poor and although there were plenty of the usual winter birds around there was nothing close enough to the hide to get interested in. Gadwall from the North Shore Hide. For a large image on my website.

The Tall Birder: August 2016
http://tallbirder.blogspot.com/2016_08_01_archive.html
Monday, 29 August 2016. Baulking and Shellingford: 29 August. With the glorious bank holiday weather this afternoon, it was time to switch back into dragonfly mode especially as the season is coming to a close. I was also keen to try out my new 100-400 zoom lens on dragonflies for the first time, after it had worked rather well for the Little Stints last weekend. Performing a flying display for the White Horse Show in nearby Uffington! One late Black-tailed Skimmer. And 20 of both Migrant Hawkers. The gr...

The Tall Birder: December 2016

Friday, 30 December 2016. Scary Hill, Oxon 30 December 2016. With the thick fog this morning it didn't seem worth going out birding, so I went for a walk on the Downs instead. Afterwards as the fog had mostly cleared and the light was again superb, I went the long way home looking for suitable photo targets from the car. Yellowhammer - go to my website. For a larger image. Yellowhammer bathing - go to my website. For a larger image. Linnet drinking - go to my website. For a larger image. But where to go?

The Tall Birder: January 2017
http://tallbirder.blogspot.com/2017_01_01_archive.html
Sunday, 15 January 2017. Gloucs and Oxon mini tour 14 January 2016. Waxwings are always a good, albeit challenging photographic subject. With the Oxford birds seemingly gone, the most reliable location appeared to be Cheltenham where a flock of about 40 birds had been reported everyday from the same location for at least the last week. Flock nearby in the top of another. This early, parking was no problem and I could start taking photos immediately from behind the open car boot! For a larger image. After...

The Tall Birder: September 2016
http://tallbirder.blogspot.com/2016_09_01_archive.html
Sunday, 25 September 2016. What a difference a week makes! Unlike last Saturday, today was warm, quite sunny and dry. As the Purple Heron. Doesn't appear to be an early riser these days, there seemed no point in getting there much earlier than 09:45, which was I arrived last week. As last week,I positioned myself part way along the bridleway and settled in for a wait. Unlike last week, the conditions were quite pleasant but interest was limited to a few Migrant Hawkers. Flew in, but that was about it.
