The Blokeblog

I've been to several very well known and highly esteemed training schools in the last couple of years, where young (or even not so young) makers were encouraged to produce so called 'piston fit' drawers. There's nothing inherently wrong with the practise as it encourages absolute precision in the making and fitting of parts. A drawer thus made and fitted, by anyone, is an achievement to be naturally chuffed about.and quite rightly so. The one that moved was obviously a perfectly fitted. The late Edward B...

The Blokeblog: Chest of Drawers in American Cherry

http://woodbloker.blogspot.com/2015/07/chest-of-drawers-in-american-cherry.html

Chest of Drawers in American Cherry. Owing to a long hiatus in the publication of this monumental blog, the details on the construction of this piece have receded into the darkest and deepest recesses of my pea sized brain, but worry not, dear peruser, it's been peppered with the most horrendous cockups so much so that at one time it had to be completely scrapped and remade. For your delight, later on in this entry, I'll relate the very last occurrence of a 'faux pas terrible'. Drawer bottoms are Cedar o...

Bags are packed and in the words of the 60's tune, " I'm ready to go. Ten nights in Barbados staying at the SoCo Hotel. Sneaky Stuff.I and II. This cabinet, for some reason best known to itself, appears to be coming together reasonably well. To date, apart from one blindingly obvious 'cock up'. There haven't been too many serious blunders and if all goes to plan, it should be finished reasonably soon. That said, Plan 'A' was for the 'Titanic' to get to NYC in one piece. The answer was surprisingly simple.

A couple of posts ago, I mentioned that the verticals on the latest cabinet were veneered ply, shown above, but the horizontals were solid, presenting a distinct jointing problem…one will move and the other won't. My solution is to have some unhappy, cross dowels in the vertical bits into which would eventually go some rather large screws. To accommodate the movement of the elm, the pan-head screws will. The Double Square Cabinet. The Double Square Cabinet on it's new stand has been finished at last. The new one is subtly thinner in all sections and has two end rails instead of just one as in the old stand, all surfaces have been made flush. There are also 'feet' made from Indian Ebony. 8230;and the stub tenons are now raised, rounded and wedged with some more Indian Ebony. Drawer detail remains the same. 8230;with a view showing the rear of the cabinet as well. 8230;which is mirrored on the back. The ve...

Dalbergian Times: January 2009

http://dalbergiantimes.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

The things I make. Sunday, 11 January 2009. And so it begins. Hello to anybody who happens across this wee online diary. Chances are if you find yourselves here it's because you know of my work as a designer/maker. Chances are it's my work as a jeweller that brought you here as that is what I spend probably 75 % of my time making, although,as you will find out over the next few months (if i can hold your attention.),I feel inspired to make all manner of things. Dalbergian Times: Mahogany Mushroom

http://dalbergiantimes.blogspot.com/2010/01/mahogany-mushroom.html

The things I make. Saturday, 16 January 2010. In the first video I will show how I prepare a piece of square section Mahogany to be turned into a mushroom. The sanding disc has 80 grit paper PVA glued to a Birch ply faceplate. The turning tool is a 2.5mm square graver that is sharpened like a parting tool on one end and like a round scraper on the other. It has a friction fit into the mahogany handle and is easilly swapped end to end when required. The second video is of me turning the actual mushroom.

The things I make. Saturday, 29 August 2009. Adrian Baird Ba Than. Sunday, 16 August 2009. I mentioned in my last post that I have been making the usual cufflinks, pendants and earrings and I realise that I haven't posted any pics of earrings,so,here we go. The first pic shows 2 pairs of drop earrings made from Turquoise, Blackwood, beef bone, African Padauk, Osage Orange, Malachite and Black Walnut. The final pair are traditional bezel set Carnelian, gold and silver studs. Adrian Baird Ba Than. I tend t...

Dalbergian Times: Shoulder Plane

http://dalbergiantimes.blogspot.com/2010/03/shoulder-plane.html

The things I make. Monday, 1 March 2010. After much ado here is my Boxwood,Blackwood,Mopane and Lignum Vitae shoulder plane. I intended to make this plane 15mm wide but a moments distraction on the sander resulted in a width of 14.6mm,not a huge deal but enough to unleash some spectacularly colourful language and a small but steady stream of self flagellation. However,I saw her sitting on the shelf this morning and thought,. Hey,let's see if I can get her to make shavings.". I've called her Bethsheby aft...

http://dalbergiantimes.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html

The things I make. Monday, 4 May 2009. Mallet from a Bowl. For the past couple of years I have been slowly but surely replacing my shop bought tools with a collection of tools that I have made myself. There is a sense of satisfaction that comes from making things using tools you have made yourself that is difficult to put into words,it's just awesome! My latest tool creation is this lignum vitae mallet. Now,my first port of call whenever I'm looking to buy wood or supplies these days is,of course,eBay.

The things I make. Sunday, 24 January 2010. This post features my prototype Bocote, brass, stainless, mild and high carbon tool steel, travel carving tool. The tip of this tool is interchangeable thanks to a clutch mechanism that locks the cutting tip in place. This allows many different tips to be carried in a relatively small space, say a leather wallet and the handle may simply be stowed in a pocket. Ping G15 Irons

The technology of the G15 Iron provides the high-launching, maximum forgiveness benefits that the majority of golfers rely on to bring consistency to their iron play. The stainless steel iron’s cavity design features a new Custom Tuning Port (CTP) which expands the perimeter weighting and increases the moment of inertia. Weight savings from a thinner face is re-positioned to the toe for added forgiveness on mis-hits and its wider sole produces a higher launch angle. Insight to the Limelight - Wrap It Up.
