Woods Walks and Wildlife: April 2015

http://woodswalksandwildlife.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Sunday, April 26, 2015. Two Weekends of Wildflowers. Everything's changing so quickly outside now! Last weekend, I went into the woods behind our house to check out the wildflowers, and I was pretty well astonished by the variety of blooming plants I found just in this little sloping area. A bunch of these flowers were ones I'd never encountered before! The Cutleaf Toothworts ( Cardamine concatenata. I seemed to have missed the peak blooms on this Blue Cohosh ( Caulophyllum thalictroides. When I went out...

Woods Walks and Wildlife: June 2015

http://woodswalksandwildlife.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

Sunday, June 28, 2015. Out on the Ocean. I think the ocean is awesome, and I know so little about the creatures that live there, especially away from shore. Unfortunately, as I discovered on a whale-watching trip a few years ago. On Friday afternoon, at low tide (apparently this place gets dangerous when the tide is high), Paul and I took a trip out to the north jetty at the Samoa Dunes Recreation Area, and it was indeed awesome. I don't often get to see waves from this perspective:. It made some impress...

Woods Walks and Wildlife: The Phoebes Are Moving In

http://woodswalksandwildlife.blogspot.com/2015/04/the-phoebes-are-moving-in.html

Friday, April 17, 2015. The Phoebes Are Moving In. A pair of Eastern Phoebes has been hanging around our house recently, and a few days ago I figured out why. They've been building a nest under the deck on the back of our house! Actually, I've read that it's the female who exclusively builds the nest, while the male accompanies her. It's a lovely little moss-and-mud structure, set on top of a light fixture:. She's found a nice spot in the yard to gather moss:. Sing it, Mr. Cardinal:. I didn't know flower...

Woods Walks and Wildlife: January 2015

http://woodswalksandwildlife.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Saturday, January 24, 2015. I relocated my trail camera to watch this spot (I think I've finally figured out the best way to set up this device), and indeed, the deer definitely pass this way:. How nice of these creatures to pause exactly in front of the camera to have their portraits taken! The lady above had her mouth open in all three of her pictures; I'm not sure whether she's chewing or panting, but why would a deer be panting in the middle of winter? Tuesday, January 20, 2015. Quiet, that is, excep...

The “Mydas” Touch | Eye on Nature

https://eyeonnature.wordpress.com/2013/07/24/the-mydas-touch

Views of nature from the New Jersey Highlands. Laquo; Damselfly Hitchhikers. The “Mydas” Touch. July 24, 2013 by Eye on Nature. A few days ago, I spotted a large (about 2 inches, or 5 cm, long), wasp-like insect nectaring on swamp milkweed ( Asclepias incarnata. In my garden. Although it looked like a wasp, I suspected that it wasn’t because it appeared to have only one pair of wings and it didn’t have a narrow, wasp-like waist. I consulted BugGuide.net. And bee balm ( Monarda fistulosa. Thanks for your ...

Exfanding Your Horizons: Thinking.

http://www.exfanding.com/2012/12/thinking.html

Links to Our Other Projects. Friday, December 28, 2012. Things have gotten quiet around the blog lately, but that's to be expected. Lots of things going on in my personal life, and plenty of other projects I've been working on, all on top of the regular hustle and bustle of the holiday season. Also, it's quiet because it's just me. When work got busy, we started working out some ways to ease the burden of sticking to a regular posting schedule- like his weekly Waiting for Wednesday. The official story is...

Exfanding Your Horizons: August 2008

http://www.exfanding.com/2008_08_01_archive.html

Links to Our Other Projects. Saturday, August 30, 2008. Everyone plays video games. even those who don't. The Webster's New World College Dictionary (Third Edition) I've got sitting on my desk here defines a video game. As "any of various games involving images, controlled by players, on a cathode-ray tube or other electronic screen." Perhaps not 100% precise (text-based games don't seem to fit the definition), but close enough. I think many of us forget that video games aren't just Super Mario Bros.

Sunday September 8 was transition day … we awoke to our final breakfast at Bootham Gardens … if you know me, you know I ordered a full Yorkshire breakfast (yes, this girl does have a thing for new foods and full gastronomic experiences). Los Alamos Woods Wanderer

Los Alamos Woods Wanderer. Wednesday, June 17, 2015. Herding Cattle in Corral Canyon. For a while, I've wanted to hike Corral Canyon in the Jemez. Yesterday was the day. I hoped to check it out as a future hike for the Monday group. After my experience "herding" the cattle up canyon, I'm not sure they'd appreciate my loose boweled, bellowing bovine companions. On the drive back to Los Alamos, between the County Line and American Spring Road, hail had accumulated at the sides and thinly covered the road.

The Tug of Wildness. Filed under Blog Post. This morning I had the presence of mind to step away from my computer and go for a little hike with my dog Matika. Glitches in online systems have been frustrating me lately, making me short-tempered. Technology is always difficult for those of us who would rather be immersed in wildness. My grandkids will be here soon. I look forward to spending as much time in the woods with them as possible. Then perhaps those technical difficulties won’t m...After finding a...
