Los Alamos Woods Wanderer

Los Alamos Woods Wanderer. Wednesday, June 17, 2015. Herding Cattle in Corral Canyon. For a while, I've wanted to hike Corral Canyon in the Jemez. Yesterday was the day. I hoped to check it out as a future hike for the Monday group. After my experience "herding" the cattle up canyon, I'm not sure they'd appreciate my loose boweled, bellowing bovine companions. On the drive back to Los Alamos, between the County Line and American Spring Road, hail had accumulated at the sides and thinly covered the road.

Los Alamos Woods Wanderer: Las Conchas Canyon: A Pretty Canyon in the Jemez Mountains, New Mexico

http://woodswanderer.blogspot.com/2008/07/las-conchas-canyon-pretty-canyon-in.html

Los Alamos Woods Wanderer. Tuesday, July 8, 2008. Las Conchas Canyon: A Pretty Canyon in the Jemez Mountains, New Mexico. In Ski Touring in Northern New Mexico. Available at the Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce.) There is a large parking pullout on the north side of NM4, just east of Las Conchas Canyon. Forcing myself to look more closely, I was relieved to realize they were only a mother and daughter deer! I'm not sure what this piece of concrete with the hole in the middle is but it looks like it could h...

Los Alamos Woods Wanderer. Thursday, May 28, 2015. Camp May Road Trail Scenes. There is a route I follow year-around, south of Camp May Road, called the Camp May Road Trail (CMRT). Before the 2011 Las Conchas wildfire, it was lightly traveled, not too distinct. After the wildfire, it was discovered by hikers, runners and bicyclists. It's used every May as part of the course for the Jemez Mountain Trail Runs. It is a well broken in trail now - a little too much in places. After peering at the Reservoir, I...

Los Alamos Woods Wanderer. Sunday, October 27, 2013. Upper Pipeline Road Trek. On Sunday, October 13, I determined to hike Pipeline Road to the top. Spouse dropped me off at the bottom of Pipeline in Quemazon Community and from there, I walked uphill to Pajarito Mountain Ski Area, for a 9 mile hike,. I had worked up to this hike. Looking into Quemazon Canyon from Upper Pipeline Road, uphill of the Quemazon Trail intersection. Looking into this wild, burned canyon helps to explain the epic amounts of ...

Woods Walks and Wildlife

Sunday, August 9, 2015. West Coast Neighbors (Or, We Have Phoebes Here, Too! After almost a year sharing a yard. With friendly Eastern Phoebes back in Ohio, I've come to really love these little flycatchers. So I was super happy to discover that we have phoebe neighbors here in California, too! A Black Phoebe keeps showing up in our back yard to hunt for flying insects, and it doesn't seem to mind at all when I hang out with it (just a few yards away):. Apparently these big doves have displaced most of t...

The Tug of Wildness. Filed under Blog Post. This morning I had the presence of mind to step away from my computer and go for a little hike with my dog Matika. Glitches in online systems have been frustrating me lately, making me short-tempered. Technology is always difficult for those of us who would rather be immersed in wildness. My grandkids will be here soon. I look forward to spending as much time in the woods with them as possible. Then perhaps those technical difficulties won’t m...After finding a...
