An ongoing evaluation of my educational philosophies and principles
John Woolf's Professional Blog: Tech-literate teaching
http://woolfjohnpblog.blogspot.com/2009/12/tech-literate-teaching.html
John Woolf's Professional Blog. An ongoing evaluation of my educational philosophies and principles. By embracing technology in the classroom, the tech-literate teacher helps foster a more democratic system of education, relevant to students' contemporary experience, while developing and advancing skills and knowledge. Only by embracing technology without fear and learning collaboratively can we keep pace with our students, much less hope to instruct them. My EDM 310 course blog.
John Woolf's Professional Blog: My guiding principles
http://woolfjohnpblog.blogspot.com/2009/10/my-guiding-principles.html
John Woolf's Professional Blog. An ongoing evaluation of my educational philosophies and principles. Three tenets comprise my teaching philosophy: clearly defined, rigorous standards; historically and individually relevant curriculum;. Important, or relevant only to English-speaking culture. Informed reading and discussion of all literature simply benefits from critically reading and understanding canonical works within historical and cultural context. John Woolf's Professional Blog: A brief word on "proper English"
http://woolfjohnpblog.blogspot.com/2009/12/brief-word-on-proper-english.html
John Woolf's Professional Blog. An ongoing evaluation of my educational philosophies and principles. A brief word on "proper English". Secondary English classes in America are thought to teach "proper English," but when we account for different styles of communication appropriate to the cultures of our increasingly diverse student population, "proper" seems to become a wholly subjective term. We should consider the definition and context of "proper English" before proceeding with its application.
John Woolf's Professional Blog: My professional qualifications
http://woolfjohnpblog.blogspot.com/2009/12/my-professional-qualifications.html
John Woolf's Professional Blog. An ongoing evaluation of my educational philosophies and principles. I will graduate the University of South Alabama with a double major in Education: Secondary (Language Arts) and English, and by completing my coursework to satisfaction of all requirements, I will be considered "qualified" to teach in the state of Alabama. The study of composition and literature should not be reduced to vocational application. However, those who excel in such studies enjoy advantages ...
John Woolf's Professional Blog: Why teach literature?
http://woolfjohnpblog.blogspot.com/2009/10/why-teach-literature.html
John Woolf's Professional Blog. An ongoing evaluation of my educational philosophies and principles. First: alone among the primary subjects in American education, only literature addresses essential questions of humanity. No other major content area explores subjectivity or questions morality, perceptions, beliefs, emotions, and consciousness. Literature captivates; readers plumb the boundless depths of human experience. They respond viscerally and learn empathically. My EDM 310 course blog.

John Woolf's EDM 310 Blog: On "This Is How We Dream"

John Woolf's EDM 310 Blog. Thursday, October 22, 2009. On "This Is How We Dream". For all your accurate poll number needs, by the way.). I don't mean to pooh-pooh Mr. (Dr? Miller's presentation or high-minded ideals. As a book person who's deep in the thrall of new media, I'm fully behind his dream, instinctively and optimistically. But my instincts also scream out for somebody to play devil's advocate when we talk about a future that demands "extraordinary" resources, when extraordinary resource...Maybe...

John Woolf's EDM 310 Blog: On "The Machine Is (Changing) Us"
http://woolfjedm310fall2009.blogspot.com/2009/11/on-machine-is-changing-us.html
John Woolf's EDM 310 Blog. Monday, November 30, 2009. On "The Machine Is (Changing) Us". In the midst of a fabulous array of historically unprecedented and utterly mind-boggling stimuli. whatever.". But does the internet merely offer the illusion of engagement? As more engage digitally, may individuals become disconnected cognitively as well as physically? Do we respond with the same expressed self-importance facing impotence of the self, despite, or even hastened by, truly open dialogue? Or is it enough?

http://woolfjedm310fall2009.blogspot.com/2009/12/my-personal-learning-network-such-as-it.html
John Woolf's EDM 310 Blog. Tuesday, December 1, 2009. My Personal Learning Network (such as it is). When you Google Image Search "Personal Learning Network," countless incomprehensible results promulgate. This is, perhaps, the least comprehensible. Broadly speaking, I follow TED. And have become a slave to iTunes U (see, when you ride a bike 7 hours a week, you run out of podcasts, until Harvard comes along and gives you free lectures). I also read Bridging Differences. And my very own brother, Tom Woolf...

John Woolf's EDM 310 Blog: On "The Networked Student"
http://woolfjedm310fall2009.blogspot.com/2009/10/on-networked-student.html
John Woolf's EDM 310 Blog. Thursday, October 22, 2009. On "The Networked Student". Okay, that's an exaggeration. Given the tools, training, resources, and most critically, personally relevant materials, many students voraciously seek knowledge. Training, as the video plainly states, is crucial, as any erstwhile internet scholar must know the difference between good, factual, scholarly information and Things That People Type On The Internet Because They Can. But equally remarkable is the reinforcement Kaia's readers can provide, practically immediately after she creates and shares her work. John Woolf's EDM 310 Blog. Tuesday, October 20, 2009. I'm in college. I own an. I therefore speak with total authority: hey, you know what's prohibitively expensive? And stuff from Apple! So imagine my shock and delight: iTunes U. In the form of more than 200,000 downloadable lectures, presentations, audiobooks, language lessons, and more. John Woolf's EDM 310 Blog. Tuesday, December 1, 2009. A Big Question from At The Teacher's Desk. This is the horizon. It is probably here because it is an applicable metaphor. So here I was, struggling to find something innovative to say about the importance of digital collaboration and inter-networking for today's (and in many cases, yesterday's) teacher, when I run across this quote from a recent post by our friend Mr. Chamberlain from At The Teacher's Desk. How many goodly creatures are there here!

THE LITTLE WOOLFISH SHOP @ The Millrace
Wednesday, 18 March 2015. A great time was had by one and all at the great and well organized Wool Festival held in the old Corn Exchange Edinburgh. Many thanks to Elizabeth, Maciek and Peter who not only brought loads of 'stuff' to the show for me but helped me set the stand up and in the breakdown as well.. I haven't exhibited at a show for a wee while but really enjoyed it, nearly forgetting what a great buzz it is. These gloves were knitted by Tom of Holland. Darning and knitting extraordinaire.
Though small it is tasty
German-ish potato soup for a chilly Easter Sunday. Sunday, April 5th, 2015. Beautiful blood moon last night! I think that might have been the first lunar eclipse I’ve seen. Can that be true, after 40 years? But I can’t remember seeing others. Vaguely germanic potato soup. 1 onion, peeled, quartered and sliced. 2 carrots, peeled and cubed. 2 sticks celery, finely chopped. 2 leeks, trimmed and chopped. 3 rashers of smoked bacon from happy pigs. 4 or 5 large potatoes, peeled and cut into 1.5 cm cubes. Heat ...

John Woolf's EDM 310 Blog. Wednesday, December 2, 2009. Never can say goodbye. What can I say? Got me into the spirit. There's almost nothing to say after watching MJ at the height of his pre-pubescent powers, except RIP, you crazy-talented freakshow. Classmates, Dr. Strange, Others: This is it, for now, but come find me the future. I plan to be an active participant in it.
