Work for Idle Hands: Mixing Colours

http://workidlehands.blogspot.com/2015/10/mixing-colours.html

Colour isn’t something I think about too much, my priority is to work through my stash the best I can. It is made up of donations and charity packs that I pick up whenever they’re available, so I don’t have much say in the colour choices. We saw my getting into colour darning last time. And I did once purchase a pack of cottons only for their colour appeal. I dived straight in to making some squares, curious about how random combinations would turn out. This is what I had in my stash. The pattern (single...

Work for Idle Hands: June 2015

http://workidlehands.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

Winter is fast upon us so it's time to get busy. After making the baby blanket, I started thinking about my next new challenge. I came up with this idea to attempt a school vest for my DD. I remember myself wearing a polo neck, woollen tunic and two woollen school jumpers on top of each other in my childhood years. I could not imagine how she could possibly be warm enough in the playground with only a polo shirt, lycra pants and poly-cotton zip jacket. We had a sudden cold snap in April. Soon enough, I f...

Work for Idle Hands: Winter Work

http://workidlehands.blogspot.com/2015/08/winter-work.html

As most know, winter is a time to get cosy and right into all your woolly yarn. During winter I feel really driven just by wanting to be warm. While we ourselves rush inside to turn the heater on, it’s unbearable to imagine how people in need must be feeling. What a good way to get motivated! First, I had to do some urgent darning before all that winter wool and leather wore our holes even bigger. I learnt that it’s better to match the thread ply to the fabric. My first charity square. I finished it off ...

Work for Idle Hands: April 2014

http://workidlehands.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html

On taking up crochet, one thing in particular starts happening very quickly:. An obsession with yarn. I’m not sure how it is for others – maybe some people start trawling patterns first, and then make a shopping list of what they need. But I seem to be always on some driven, never-ending hunt for colours, textures, fibres. In the early days, I crocheted some snowflakes in different colours and weights, which led to a natural conclusion of what was and wasn’t snowflakey. And alternative cold colours.

Work for Idle Hands: April 2015

http://workidlehands.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

I’ve just finished the biggest item I’ve ever crocheted, and it’s a ‘real’ item:. It’s taken a long time to get here. It seems like another lifetime when I was making, failing and re-making my cream squares for the crochet-a-long. Where would it end? After the squares and corners were all done, I next made the centre star. It was kind of like doing a gigantic snowflake, working in the round, using easy granny stitches. It can get hot working with a large woolly item in your lap in the summer. You can see...

Idle time at work

Idle time at work. Thursday, May 23, 2013. What are you doing? Really, is there anything called doing nothing? I was of the opinion nothing means "not doing what you are supposed to do", like doing nothing could mean not working at the time of work. But I was wrong. Nothing actually means doing some activity which reduces your capacity to perform as good as you could before in tasks. Thursday, May 23, 2013. Location: Maharashtra, India. Work for Idle Hands

Stalling on baby booties. These baby booties took way longer to knit up than I wanted. While it was exciting to return to a baby project and something I’d never tried before, a couple of things ended up stalling me, the booties and my blog. In the ether, I’d heard of sock knitting two at a time. Without any pattern browsing, I thought to myself this must be done by knitting both socks onto one needle, doing the same row on the second sock immediately after doing the first. With decreases in the centre.

The Devil Makes Work for Idle Hands

The Devil Makes Work for Idle Hands. July 24, 2016. Making Tempeh as food, and village revitalisation Milkwood Permaculture courses skills for Real Life. While I was travelling in Java recently on a design exchange, I became very good friends with Tempeh. We even learned to make it village style. Everywhere we went in Java, tempeh was sold freshly made and wrapped in banana leaf at the markets, or often as a meal option in the small warungs. March 25, 2015.
