WPBO Owls Fall 2010: Recaptures

http://www.wpboowls.blogspot.com/2010/10/recaptures.html

Wednesday, October 20, 2010. Bad weather has kept the nets closed recently, but also given us a chance to catch up on data. With record numbers of Saw-whets this fall, it's no surprise we've had an unusual share of recaptures too. Sixteen previously banded Saw-whets have shown up so far. Seven were banded at WPBO in past seasons, and others hailed from Ontario, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. A Saw-whet Owl originally banded here in April 2008. October 23, 2010 at 2:50 AM. Mary Greg and Beth.

WPBO Owls Fall 2010: July 2010

http://www.wpboowls.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html

Monday, July 26, 2010. Molting juvenile Northern Saw-whet Owl. Has been going well. The weather caused us to close early a couple nights and wind shut us down completely on Saturday night. The system finally blew out of here and 30 juvenile and 1 adult Saw-whet were banded last night. We also saw a Long-eared in the net lanes, but it was not caught. So far this season 204 juvenile and 34 adult Saw-whets, and 2 Long- eareds. Sunday, July 18, 2010. We were geared up for another good night on the 16 th.

http://www.wpboowls.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html

Thursday, August 5, 2010. Moonrise over Lake Superior. High winds are also predicted with this front. There were also reports of a solar flare that could produce some northern lights. While we did not. Get any of the aurora borea. The crescent moon rose a brilliant orange over the lake tonight. Monday, August 2, 2010. Molting in its tail. Of the way grown back in. WPBO Owls Fall 2010: October 2009

http://www.wpboowls.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Thursday, October 29, 2009. A Few More Birds. Only a couple more nights of banding. The weather forecast isn't looking good. Maybe Saturday night if it isn't too windy. Totals: 3 BDOW, 2 BOOW, 1 LEOW, 123 NSWO. Monday, October 26, 2009. Not much to report on. I just felt like I should update the blog. We have not banded a new bird since the 17th. This can be mainly attributed to crummy weather. We have been having more rain and wind. Oh well ,what can you do? Totals: 2 BOOW, 3BDOW, 1 LEOW, 118 NSWO.

WPBO Owls Fall 2010: July 2009

http://www.wpboowls.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html

Tuesday, July 28, 2009. The weather continues to hinder our efforts. The above photo shows the lighthouse in some of the heavy fog that has been a common occurrence. The above juvenile Saw-whet still has some downy tufts on its feather tips. These tips have worn of the majority of the juveniles that we catch, so we assume any birds that still has them are particularly young. The underside of the leaves of Silver Maples light up beautifully at night in our LED headlamps. Monday, July 20, 2009. We had to k...

http://nightflightimages.blogspot.com/2011/10/im-sorry-it-has-been-so-long-since-we.html

Sunday, October 30, 2011. I'm sorry it has been so long since we posted on our blog. We were not expecting to have zero days off for most of the field season. Anyway, yesterday was our first full day off, and it was very exciting.because, Chris and I saw a Lynx! It looked at us curiously for a minute or two, then slowly walked off into the forest. And, we had our cameras on our laps- what luck! You can see the ear tufts better in the second shot. October 31, 2011 at 5:42 AM. Where are we now?

Sunday, August 7, 2011. Here are some shots of the Northern Lights taken a few nights ago at Whitefish Point, MI. They lasted most of the night and were very active. The Big Dipper is also visible in some of the shots. Nova silhouetted by the Northern Lights. The small row of lights in the above photo is actually one of the large freighters that regularly pass by on Lake Superior. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
