: Cultural Adjustment

Peace Corps service is like a distance run. We're here for a long time, and every once in a while, we hit a wall, like any runner does. There are occasional hazards, and not everyone who starts the race finishes it. We were seventy in my batch, now we're sixty-four. Since our first six months are gone, it's time to dig in and change the world. Or, less ridiculously, to try to accomplish something sustainable with our respective agencies. 171; Tarlac Adventures. : June 8

http://www.writeofpassageonline.com/exploration/127

The kids are back. I came to work on Tuesday, and it was mighty quiet, and I wondered why. There were a handful of residents last week. Then, the XLT arrived at five, and Oh, there they are! I didn't realize how much I missed them until I saw all their faces again. It may not be. Maybe she will still finish, just at a different school. Maybe the young man will have a good job and be able to support her properly, and they won't live in poverty. Maybe. But, realistically, probably not. It Must be July.

My Peace Corps Reading List. I've decided it might be a good idea to keep track of what I read while I'm in the Philippines. This, then, will be a floating post that I update as I read. I will not include the kid books that I read with the boys that I tutor. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. The Horse and His Boy. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Out of the Silent Planet. The Fellowship of the Ring. The Return of the King. Letters From Father Christmas. The Unparalleled Adventure Of One Hans Pfaall.

Is mandatory; growing up. Wednesday, December 29, 2010. I'm pretty sure that bowling is the most awkward sport ever. I even feel awkward calling it a sport. I even feel awkward when I say the word, "bowling." Bowling. Yuck. I'm not saying it isn't fun, because it is. I am saying that it's just. awkward. First off, I really want to meet the guy who thought up bowling. Why don't we take 10 weirdly shaped pieces of wood and throw a heavy ball at them and try to knock them over? That would be so much fun!

Write of Passage | This is not my home…

This is not my home…. The Veil is Removed. The Veil is Removed. And we, who with unveiled faces. A reflection on 2 Corinthians, chapters 3-5, NIV). Today, the image of a veiled face is present in all the media. Yet, it’s nothing new. In some societies it’s legal to wear a veil, and illegal to not wear a veil. In others, it poses a threat to society if you wear a veil, making it illegal if you do, legal if you don’t. Veil as a Tent. 8220;The differentiation of consciousness typical of the contemporary era...

July 13, 2016. I think when you come to the place in life where you stop trying to please everyone else, and begin to take a look at Who you really are, then and only then will you finally become your authentic self. You stop comparing yourself to others. You care less about what others think of you, and more about what You think of you. What freedom. What peace. OH MY CHILD, MY DAUGHTER OF SONG. FINALLY, FINALLY YOU ARE WHERE YOU BELONG. STANDING IN LIGHT, STANDING IN GRACE. OPEN TO MERCY, OPEN TO PEACE.

Write of Passion - Learning to live out loud...

God’s greatest gift to me…. April 25, 2015. My Daddy’s birthday is coming up next week. He would have been 74 years old. If I listen hard, I’m sure I can hear him complaining about being old and still feeling like a 25 year old inside! I would have hated to tell him that surely if there was a 25 year old trapped inside THAT scrawny body, we could have seen him trying to fight his way out. That man was always skinny, most of his life he didn’t weigh more than a buck twenty-five! But who am I to judge?
