Writerly Ways: What is tone, and how do I write about it?

http://www.writerlyways.blogspot.com/2013/04/what-is-tone.html

Monday, April 15, 2013. What is tone, and how do I write about it? When teachers, or other people who think about these things, talk about tone, they are talking about the ways that the author or narrator feels about the particular subject being discussed in the writing. While tone and mood are similar, 'tone' refers to the author, or in the case of fiction, the narrator, and 'mood' refers to the emotional response of the reader. How do authors create tone? Writerly Ways: What is an author's style?

http://www.writerlyways.blogspot.com/2013/04/what-is-authors-style.html

Monday, April 15, 2013. What is an author's style? An author's style is the author's unique combination of the components of language and writing. Much the way great chefs create a meal using specialized ingredients, equipment, and techniques, authors draw on a wealth of knowledge about language to create effects and meaning on the written page. For example, read this excerpt from the first chapter of Jane Austin's novel Emma. Now, read this excerpt from Jane Austin's novel Sense and Sensibility:. View m...

chafe: November 2008

http://thechafe.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html

Monday, November 24, 2008. Let go let go. Last night I ripped my fortune cookie fortune in half, which, I'm pretty sure, is like drawing a rune upside-down, or a pseudo-Confucian not-joke: "It is a good time to start new projects and hobbies." Not. . Unfinished projects are the baby birds of the psyche. They gape and gulp with their naked blue-tinged heads and demand you fly back and back to their nests. . Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). chafe: April 2008

http://thechafe.blogspot.com/2008_04_01_archive.html

Thursday, April 17, 2008. Sitting in my living room and I've been just a little low- with the snow, and the dusk, and then night comes and I've neglected the iTunes. And the library is playing some weird Moog stuff that only a producer could love. I apologize to the dogs for letting it go on so long. They wag their tails as I get off the couch to change the music. But then I make some tea and put on some Madeline Peyroux. I start daydreaming about building a treehouse. It's an unscheduled night tonight, ...

chafe: January 2008

http://thechafe.blogspot.com/2008_01_01_archive.html

Thursday, January 31, 2008. I am doing the Field Workshop. All that talk in grad school about figuring out where the story is taking you- I don't know. In high school, once I turned sixteen, my favorite thing to do was get in my car and head for the backroads. I'd get to a T in the road and look left, look right, and pick one. I'd see an interesting little dirt road and take it. I think I've used that model for a lot of my writing, too. In my writing right now. Check out that George Saunders interview.

http://thechafe.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html

Thursday, December 11, 2008. I'm going to try and think of this picture when I imagine the learning curve. Dirty, slapped-together. All kinds of tidbits to play with. Tuesday, December 2, 2008. Photo by Cat Palmer. I've also got saying yes on my mind. Over the last year I've noticed that the artists who say yes a lot move with exciting velocity. My friend Cat Palmer. chafe: strong and sturdy with sufficient stamina, but friendly and out-going as well

http://thechafe.blogspot.com/2009/05/strong-and-sturdy-with-sufficient.html

Friday, May 15, 2009. Strong and sturdy with sufficient stamina, but friendly and out-going as well. Today a friend from work posts a picture of her new corgi pup on her Facebook page. The universe is trying to communicate with me in the form of the . 2 Another rejection letter yesterday. That, though, is not a sign. That is a necessary part of my job. Do I get to pick and choose what might be a message or not? And I'm a person who finds. Isn't that the nature of. I'm listening, Universe. Tell me more.

chafe: kite hill after dinner

http://thechafe.blogspot.com/2009/05/kite-hill-after-dinner.html

Thursday, May 14, 2009. Kite hill after dinner. There's an open space hill near Chantal's place in the Castro. I went walking after dinner last night and found this little path up there. I love how in this city you can go a different way every time and find something totally different. I used to think that San Francisco from a distance looked like barnacles clinging to a rock. All the buildings look white from afar. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Art and Artists Mad Scientists. Kite hill after dinner.

chafe: June 2008

http://thechafe.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html

Wednesday, June 4, 2008. The Amazing Jellyfish from the Year 12,000. I think the thing about creative projects is that once something is created, it's hard to imagine that it ever didn't exist. In a couple of weeks Discovery Canada is coming to shoot footage of the Jellyfish, and then they'll shoot follow-up footage in August at Burning Man. A year and a half ago Jared didn't really even identify as an artist. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Art and Artists Mad Scientists. California College of The Arts.

Faeries With Chalkboards | The stuff of a writer's weirdo brain

The stuff of a writer's weirdo brain. October 22, 2012. About playing Novelist: I have a very conflicted (and recently surfaced) identity as an author of Young Adult fiction. Even as I’ve decided that I want most to write stories for 13 to 17 year-olds, the decision is fraught with a simply stupid amount of self-doubt. Also, there’s the sad fact that much of it is to literature what the Huffington Post is to journalism. Sure teenagers need literary characters whose experiences are real and salient to the...

Writerly Type | A blog by Robin Evans

A blog by Robin Evans. The shearling coat in question, post-Darwin. Why do we dress up animals like children? Darwin, the little monkey that sparked a media frenzy last year can finally call Storybook home. According to the Globe and Mail. I call it day after day. It’s part of our agreement. Is it something about his size? The whole scenario is custom-made for tabloid television and the coverage continues to be delivered in an ironic, mocking way, as if the whole thing is a joke.
