The two archipelagos were a great source of inspiration for Scott and, throughout the nineteenth century, several writers, mostly producing non-fictional works, came north and wrote about what they found. Other writers drew on Scott’s novel in an imaginative way. George Eliot, for example, namechecks The Pirate in her novel The Mill on the Floss. Sounds of Orkney and Shetland. The bicentenary of Walter Scott’s visit to Orkney, Shetland and Fair Isle. 2014 is the bicentenary of Walter Scott’s visit to Orkney, Shetland and Fair Isle with the lighthouse engineer Robert Stevenson. Orkney and Shetland didn’t feature on early nineteenth-century tourist routes, and Scott didn’t know quite what to expect. This film uses extracts from Scott’s own diary as we follow his route through the islands as he encounters sailors, dancers, witches, sea monsters, and an ancient pict.

Visitors to Orkney and Shetland. Writing the North at the Storytelling Centre. March 18th, 2015.

Create & Delineate – Rediscovering my creative soul

Rediscovering my creative soul. Dusting off the keyboard. January 3, 2017. The last post I wrote here was from 2014. It’s now 2017. It’s been a while, to say the least. IVF Lots of needles, lots of tears, lots of joy. An embryo. A baby. A toddler. Crazy times with my boy – he’s one bundle of energy! What shall I test my keyboard skills with?

Week #7 (part 2). April 8, 2016. In Harry C. Denny’s. Just from the intro we are given the theme for the rest of the book: Identity in the writing center. Not only is identity important but also the idea of social activism in the writing center. A topic we haven’t really touched on yet in class, and we’ve touched what seems like, just about every angle you can come at a writing center from. But then again, is this completely untouched by what we’ve covered in class so far? Apparently the pen really.
