Fractions 4 - Parts of a Group. So, we've been looking at a few things to do with fractions this week. From what I've seen, you've all coped with the content with confidence. Let's step it up a bit. We are going to. Use fractions to describe parts of a group. Task 1: Dividing groups into fractions. For this task you need to get a group of objects (maybe 30 or 40) such as counters, beans, LEGO bricks, paddle pop sticks etc. Working with a partner is always useful. So, take you collection of items.

Fractions 5 - There are different ways to say the same fraction. I think you already knew this, didn't you? 1/2 = 50% = 0.5. Yep, no surprises there. Make a table of fractions/percentages/decimals, starting with 1/2. But that's not all. We can also write equivalent fractions. That's when you write the fraction in multiple ways using different number but expressing the same ratio. 1/2 = 5/10 = 72/144 = 98/196 etc. Write down 5 different unit fractions. How would you represent these as a picture?

Fractions 3 - Parts of a whole. Draw a number line that is 20cm long. At one end put "0" and at the other end put "1". What fractions do you know that are between 0 and 1? Fractions 2 - Make equal parts. One thing you will need to know about Fractions is that you need to have equal parts. It's pretty obvious - if you are cutting a cake "in half" you don't want to get left with a smaller piece than the other person, do you? Which "half" of this cake do you want? Have a look at the following pictures. Decide which have been divided into equal parts and which haven't. Be careful - there might be some tricky ones. Draw a) a square b) a triangle c) a circle.
