Monday, 2 May 2011. I can dream, can't I? I’m supposed to be a retired author, but I’ve got so many ideas popping into my head that I sometimes think I could write another forty books. At my age, I suppose, it’s not practical to think along these lines. These days you need to find yourself an agent who will then approach a publisher on your behalf, and so everyone gets a slice of the cake, if you know what I mean. And then there’s the tax man; he needs to get his slice of the cake too. Oh, woe is me!

Friday, 30 March 2012. Yes, I am back after a long absence. The past year was not easy for my husband, Vernon, and certainly not for me. It is only by the grace of God that we have come through it in the way we have, and can find enjoyment in life again. At our age any kind of illness is making us aware of our own mortality, and at the same time it is also making us more aware of this beautiful world we live in, and how fortunate and how blessed we are. I also crocheted a queen-sized blanket for myself.

Monday, 28 February 2011. From My Memory Box. 8220;Pampoene Op Die Dak”. I am only now realising that my brain is like a computer. I have things stored away that pop up on occasions such as this. Listening to the Afrikaans song “Pampoene op die Dak” has set the ball rolling again. 8220;Pampoene Op Die Dak” means Pumpkins On The Roof. My dad used to grow pumpkins between the rows of mealies, and at the end of the season the land would be dotted with big white ‘Boerpampoene’. See photo taken at Darling).

Friday, 10 February 2012. Growing Pineapples on Hopewell. Pineapples are grown in rows from suckers or offshoots of the older plants. If you wanted to grow more pineapples you had to hook a sucker from an old plant which had multiplied from the roots up by sending out new shoots. The old plants were so tall and thorny that no one could jump over a row and would have to walk to the end of a row to reach other rows. The fruit would then be loaded onto a trailer and taken to the store for sorting and packing.

We were members of the Salem Methodist Church and most of our neighbours were Methodists. Monday, 2 May 2011. Tomorrow is not a day that I have been looking forward to. Tomorrow I see a Specialist and my radium treatment for the prostrate begins. My blood has been thinned to prevent any clots forming. My body has been marked for the treatment and I am rather scared. One of the medications is causing my vision to be out of focus.
