Friday, June 16, 2006. I met John Weeronga Bartoo a few months ago. He lives about 30 minutes drive from where I am. He is an Aboriginal man who was raised by white parents and was taught only European custom. In his words . "raised as a white man". Nowadays, there are a sizable number of Aboriginal people who are Christian. However, these stories - called "dreamings" - are still part of their cultural heritage and cherished. In the past they were used for communication between tribes, and as a way of preserving their stories on caves and on tree bark. They are like modern-day rangers, who have deep understanding of the animals. The colours were selected to match the pigments that were used by their ancestors in the red deserts of Australia. Very ancient rock and cave paintings have been found with native animals painted in this abstract style.
