I asked her what kind of cake she wanted me to make, and she said chocolate with hazelnuts. I didn't find a satisfactory recipe in my cookbooks, so I decided to adapt a double chocolate layer cake recipe that I found in Gourmet Today. Chocolate cake with Nutella frosting. Adapted from Gourmet Today. 1 1/2 cups hot brewed coffee. 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour.

Socca with lamb-eggplant sauce. Crust adapted from Bean by Bean. Sauce recipe is original. I have written this recipe to make the sauce and crust at the same time, but the sauce can definitely be made ahead of time if you prefer. 1 tbs olive oil. 3/4 cup chopped onion. 4-5 cloves of garlic, minced. 3 tbs tomato paste.

Adapted from Cooking Light, July 2011. 4 slices of bacon, chopped. 2 cups finely chopped onion. 1 cup finely chopped green bell pepper. 6 medium garlic cloves, finely chopped. 3/4 cup canned crushed tomatoes (no salt added). 1/4 cup packed brown sugar. 1 tbs apple cider vinegar. 1 tbs Dijon mustard. 1 tsp hot smoked paprika. 3/4 tsp kosher salt. 1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper. 1 chipotle chile in adobo sauce, chopped.
