A Coastal Gardener's Journal. Gardening Near the Gulf Coast. May 30, 2016. May 30, 2016. The Chickadees have moved out of the bird box which should relieve the Bluebirds who have kept watch on it. The Bluebird couple have been back scoping out the now vacant house. I’ve seen them do this for a few days: Mr and Mrs will fly around the box, Mr will hang on the neighbor’s… Continue reading Bluebirds. May 26, 2016. A Coastal Gardener's Journal. Gardening Near the Gulf Coast. Beware of Killer Plants. April 8, 2015. While it is always best, in my opinion, to plant organic in your food garden, not everyone in the U.S. has access to quality garden stores. If you live in one of these Garden-Store Deserts (meaning there are no quality garden stores) and grow vegetables and herbs from conventional nursery plants I want to caution you on one thing: neonicotinoids. So what are neonicotinoids? I believe it is very irresponsi...

A Southern Eden: February 2013
http://asoutherneden.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html
Just an amateur gardener in central Alabama figuring it all out as I go along. Wednesday, February 27, 2013. This garden would never have been possible without Jamey. This post is in honor of him. Tuesday, February 19, 2013. And various other unmentionable parts. Try that when you are taking 6 Lortab 10 a day. I was doing well not to drool all over myself when I sat up. Nothing is worse than waking up from a deep sleep to find your face is lying in a cold pool of slobber. Eeeeeeeeeew! Have a great week!

http://asoutherneden.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html
Just an amateur gardener in central Alabama figuring it all out as I go along. Thursday, December 27, 2012. Well, I'm Finally Done Baking for a While. I don’t know how many of you saw the Christmas issue of Southern Living, but it had the most beautiful cake on the cover! So I decided to put my limited skills to work and try to make the cake. It took me four nights after work to get everything ready for this thing. De-seeded two pints of raspberry filling to go between the layers…. Will you join me?

Just an amateur gardener in central Alabama figuring it all out as I go along. Thursday, November 29, 2012. Feeling a Little Like Christmas. Wow where has the time gone. You can’t see them very well, but in this bowl are the last of my mother’s decoration she bought in 1956. There are so many different shapes and sizes in this little bowl. The designs remind me of the big chrome bumpers on cars from that time period. The garland is hung above the door that enters the piano room. I also draped it around t...

http://asoutherneden.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html
Just an amateur gardener in central Alabama figuring it all out as I go along. Monday, January 28, 2013. In other news, I got evaluated by the surgeon and I’ll be having my procedure on February 11th. It’s not a major ordeal; I just can’t do any lifting until I’m completely healed. I’ll be out of commission for 6 weeks after that, but at least I should be rip raring and ready to go by the time spring gets here. Yaaaaaaay! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Atlantic Coastal Kayaker
In the summer of 2014, Justine Curgenven and Sarah Outen traversed the Aleutian Islands, completing what was the greatest, as yet undone, technical sea kayak expedition in the world. The film is spectacular, full of high adventure, a touching friendship, and some of the most magnificent scenery on earth . - Jon Turk. A satisfied reader says, I have been getting Atlantic Coastal Kayaker since Day 1. It is the closest thing to perfection.

Gardening and family life by the sea. Cerulean blue skies, family days and ping-pong. August 12, 2015. I’ve been feeling a bit ‘meh’ for the last few days and it seems I’m not alone. CJ’s post at Above the River. We had a lovely afternoon at Broadstairs (after some school uniform shopping) sunshine, sandy beach and ice creams. It’s a charming Victorian seaside town and well worth a visit. I made Jane Brocket’s Lemon Chiffon Cake (from her book Vintage Cakes. We were in London to see the Summer Exhibition...

a coastal point of view
A coastal point of view. Sunday, May 3, 2015. The Race Is On. Five years ago, Alexandra, Mark, Graham. And friends, who are really family now. And ran, and ran and ran. And drove and drove and drove. From Boston to Provincetown. This money was to go toward research. The disease that Kenny, Alexandra and Graham's dad. My husband and best friend. Was diagnosed with when he was 49 years old. Alexandra was a Sophomore in college. Graham was a Senior in high school. A crazy time in our lives. They ran in May.
