The Gardener's Rest: January 2015
http://thegardenersrest.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
The vaguely green-fingered thoughts of a rambling rose. Or rather faded greens and browns. On Boxing Day we had quite an amount of snow which stuck around til New Year's Day. Then came the winds. The first battering came and went with little disruption to the garden. The second time round we were not so lucky and lost part of the fence in the front garden. We will need to replace the whole run. In the raised bed, tiny crimson shoots are emerging from Bumblebee's rhubarb crown. With one exception. Win...

The Gardener's Rest: September 2014
http://thegardenersrest.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
The vaguely green-fingered thoughts of a rambling rose. Younger, all photographs were captured on a film, taken to be developed and then returned, often with little stickers on the duff ones suggesting what might have caused the failed capture. These days of course if you take a bum shot, you can just delete it and have another go. I bought this little two up two down in early December, so not a lot of gardening was even contemplated until the following summer. And along came my love of clematis. It ...

The Gardener's Rest: Taking stock
http://thegardenersrest.blogspot.com/2015/08/taking-stock.html
The vaguely green-fingered thoughts of a rambling rose. It's that time of the year again; time to see what has worked and what hasn't in the summer garden. It's also a good idea to see what jobs need doing come the autumn. First off the deck. It's so in need of being replaced as the whole thing is rotting - the sound of the wood splintering under foot is unnerving. The pond has been a great success. A frog has taken up residence and the plants in and around are doing well. The bed below is lacking in wow...

The Gardener's Rest: September 2013
http://thegardenersrest.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
The vaguely green-fingered thoughts of a rambling rose. In another couple of weeks it will be dark when I leave for work. In the meantime I shall enjoy waking to this view while I can. In the house, the orchids are still going strong with others beginning to join in the party. This is the orchid I saved from work last year - it has 16 blooms this year so I must be doing something right. The Toad thinks the centre of the flowers look light a bird in flight. The 'red' hydrangea we brought with us did darke...

The Gardener's Rest: April 2014
http://thegardenersrest.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
The vaguely green-fingered thoughts of a rambling rose. Now the raised bed is weed free, Bumblebee's next task is to sow his seeds. He's learned how to make a seed drill to make weeding easier (weeds do not generally grow in straight lines you see), and to tip a few seeds into his hand before taking a pinch. Sowing into each drill, marked with a waterproof label. And using the back of the hoe to cover his seeds. Everything gets a good watering, including the plants in the new birch bed. New addition....

A day without any x's is a wasted day. Wednesday, 26 October 2016. Week 4 - Fairy SAL. As I move onto the easier part of the fairy, Essie begins the wings. She has also already picked out all the detail with backstitch. I have opted for a different colour for the skirt and fairy dust, using cream thread with Kreinik for a subtle hint of sparkle.

The Gardener's Rest: August 2014
http://thegardenersrest.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
The vaguely green-fingered thoughts of a rambling rose. There's a change in the air. It is mid August, but it feels like autumn is fast approaching. There's a fresher feeling in the mornings and the nights are beginning to draw in. So many things need ticking off our gardening 'to do' list. Since today was dry, it was a good opportunity to get the deck spruced up. A stiff brush and a stiff breeze spurred us on. The apples are ripening well but they don't yet seem as big as last year. First job for me (he...
