Adventures of the Called

Adventures of the Called. Reflections of a first call pastor. Wednesday, December 11, 2013. What is a Smorgasbord Anyway? And Why Do Some Churches Have Them? Last week my parents' congregation hosted their annual Swedish Smorgasbord, an event I have never entirely understood. I didn't completely grow up in that congregation, we moved there when I was in 8th grade, so this is not a tradition I have from young childhood. Was an unknown word, lutefisk. Well some people really enjoy them, especially immigran...

Adventures of the Called: August 2012

http://adventuresofthecalled.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html

Adventures of the Called. Reflections of a first call pastor. Sunday, August 5, 2012. What are your gifts? Today was suppose to be our outdoor worship service. Well despite the heat and high humidity we were set up for outside when at 9:30 a downpour came through causing us to move inside - granted it ended up being nice and not raining throughout the worship service - but better on the safe side. What are your gifts? But we still do have gifts. So what are your gifts? What is a talent that you have?

Adventures of the Called. Reflections of a first call pastor. Wednesday, May 8, 2013. Am I a Helper? A week and a half ago, on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, I was sitting in my living room doing some prep work for Sunday's worship service, while Bob was upstairs in the office working as well. And then a major event took place. So on Monday I went to visit. I went mainly out of my own curiosity - How were they? Would they be okay? But what happened, well, I received a huge gift. When I was a boy and I w...

Adventures of the Called: Spreading Christmas Cheer

http://adventuresofthecalled.blogspot.com/2013/12/spreading-christmas-cheer.html

Adventures of the Called. Reflections of a first call pastor. Thursday, December 5, 2013. One of my personal Christmas-movie favorites, has the line “The best way to spread Christmas Cheer, is singing loud for all to hear.” That line becomes essential to the plot as Santa is trying to escape the Central Park Rangers when one of the characters starts singing Santa Claus is Coming to Town. But there are other ways to spread that cheer, and the other ways are often spread that cheer in more long-lasting ways.

Adventures of the Called: July 2012

http://adventuresofthecalled.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html

Adventures of the Called. Reflections of a first call pastor. Monday, July 30, 2012. I decided to forgo the gospel reading this week in favor of the second lesson, Ephesians 3:14-20. There is just something so basic about the letter to the Ephesians - talking about the basics of faith - and especially in this passage - how great God's love is for us. So maybe I'll stick with Ephesians for a bit this summer and preach on some of the basics of faith. It also means that I get to avoid 5 weeks of bread.

UCC Seminarian contemplating a new church start in Maine. A mission focused church, concentrating on disaster response, UCC style. Tuesday, November 24, 2009. While Planning for Thanksgiving. Now that it is Thanksgiving week, I have noticed that the pace of shoppers at HRD food store is more frantic, and people are more cranky. I decided, I am not returning again accept with a list so that I wont have to make several trips during the week or even in one day for the duration of this busy week.

UCC Seminarian contemplating a new church start in Maine. A mission focused church, concentrating on disaster response, UCC style. Wednesday, November 18, 2009. What would it take? Every family should have an emergency plan or a contingency plan of some sort, right? What if a house burnt down, or there is a snow storm that that closes schools while mom and dad are at work, or a bad storm where aunt or uncle live 6 hours away and you need to get in touch to check in on them? Tumbling in the Sand. Sparks from the Lectionary. Just me thinking outloud. I missed my exit. I blame the leaves. Reflecting the pink and bluing sky. Mesmerizing ephemeral beauty blinding me. I take the longer way. Mistake that it is. To take this road that wound by. The river dancing, shining. To see the cold beauty. Of Sikorsky’s Blackhawk perched, steely, deadly. To watch morning workers. Coming to terms with the day coffee, steaming, vests, reflective. To experience this moment. Taking the winding way.
