What exactly is the Appalachian Trail? The trail was first envisioned by Benton MacKaye in the early 1920s and with the help of Myron H Avery and numerous other volunteers it became a reality in 1937. The first person to ever successfully thru-hike the trail was Earl Shaffer, who was a WWII veteran looking to walk off the war.

The next day we woke up and the storm was worse so we moved next door to a nicer motel that was the same cheap rate, just less sketchy, and sat in bed and drank beer. We did, however, hear more about the puppies. Those 22 miles may have been the longest of the trip yet. When we first got to The Captain's we walked on the back porch and Aldo backed into a corner terrified and peed everywhere. What the hell were we getting ourselves into?
