Bat, Bean, Beam: November 2014
https://bat-bean-beam.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Monday, November 24, 2014. Ruins of our present future. A friend of mine used to own a house in an abandoned village. It was a symbolic kind of ownership: he paid no rates nor taxes, because there were no services and the place had no value. He just had his name on the title, and a key, which is not something you necessarily needed to enter the old stone cottage. They said that wild horses had returned to the valley, although we didn’t see any. The death of Salton City. The death of Kosmograd. The abando...
Bat, Bean, Beam: July 2014

Monday, July 28, 2014. Making the past strange: Justine Fletcher's '607'. Before having to hurry back to Italy, I had been planning to write about Paul Janman and Scott Hamilton’s Great South Road geocaching project. Which is quite differently structured but I find similarly inspiring. A parallel of yet another kind comes for me in the permanent and temporary displays at Foxton, a town that is constantly – and problematically – at play with its own history. Posted by Giovanni Tiso. Bat, Bean, Beam: February 2015
https://bat-bean-beam.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Monday, February 23, 2015. Mr Robeson goes to Wellington. Paul Robeson came to New Zealand in the spring of 1960, playing two concerts in Auckland, visiting Christchurch and Dunedin and exchanging songs with the watersiders in Wellington, on which occasion the Maritime Union made him a lifelong member. By the House Committee on Un-American Activities and only recently allowed to leave the country again after an eight-year domestic exile in which he was denied his passport. The play is didactic, which is ...

Monday, August 25, 2014. The Jane Clifton continuum. With his beatific, martyred air, Saint Nicholas of the Perpetual NeoLiberal Sorrows is the perfect foil for the charmless, foul-mouthed Whale Oil. Butt of a thousand blubber and blowhole jokes and oh my God what is with this metaphor? So far the revelations from, and subsequent to, the publication of Hager’s Dirty Politics. Look, we were busy, okay? Then there’s the division of right and left. Polling shows a small minority of National suppor...What th...

Monday, December 22, 2014. Of gluten trouble and the search for happiness: the year in Listener covers. Collected somewhere are old magazines, and if I’m working on the top floor of Wellington's central library I’ll often reach for a volume of the collected New Zealand Listener. Usually from the seventies or early eighties. It’s not that it was necessarily a better magazine back then – although Tom Scott’s Political Notebook. In 1982, before the magazine lost its monopoly on TV listings, the Listener.

Head of the Harbour: A grand old Lady...
http://headoftheharbour.blogspot.com/2012/10/a-grand-old-lady.html
Head of the Harbour. A place to ponder. Monday, October 8, 2012. A grand old Lady. Tug Lyttelton dockside and firing up. Here is a little bit about the tug from her website http:/ www.tuglyttelton.co.nz/. The tug Lyttelton and her engines were built in Scotland in 1907 by. I can say, wholeheartedly, that she is, indeed, a great lady. The interior detailing of the Lyttelton is just stunning, all lovely wood and gleaming brass. Others were out enjoying the excellent sailing weather. But good on them :-).

Art, Life, TV, Etc.: The proper photographer
http://cherylbernstein.blogspot.com/2012/09/the-proper-photographer.html
Art, Life, TV, Etc. The low-brow and the high-minded. Monday, September 17, 2012. A photographer asked to take our picture yesterday. "I'm a proper photographer," he said. "Works in the public art gallery collection.". He was taking photos of Christchurch people in the ruined city. Have you lived here forever? He asked, looking down through the view finder. No," we said. Just one more, he said. I'll shift my camera and one more. Closer together. Last one coming. Done. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Third Class on a One-Class Train: September 2011
http://ridingthirdclass.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html
Third Class on a One-Class Train. Sunday, 18 September 2011. The cargo cult of popular opinion. Johnny Marbles agreed to take part in a BBC Radio phone-in last week. Almost all of the callers were furiously angry and chided him for bullying a helpless old man and/or interrupting the sacrosanct proceedings of the mother of all parliaments. Lots of callers insisted on treating him as if he'd carried a deadly weapon rather than a foam pie (because it could have been. Links to this post. As Daniel Barrow obs...
Third Class on a One-Class Train: May 2011

Third Class on a One-Class Train. Thursday, 19 May 2011. Ship of Theseus FC. Owen turned out a great chapter on Milton Keynes – its strange car-crash of signals and associations, its uniquely (for Britain) schizophrenic soul caught between ‘its utopian promises and its bland, kitsch Thatcherite reality.’. WSC – October 1986). Entering administration and making improper payments. The unprecedented scale of the second deduction effectively made it a punitive relegation. As it happened, Luton were o...108: ...
Third Class on a One-Class Train: Some top-class 'comment'.
http://ridingthirdclass.blogspot.com/2011/09/some-top-class-comment.html
Third Class on a One-Class Train. Tuesday, 6 September 2011. Inverted commas used there to imply chuckling dismissal of the notion that there was ever such a thing as a working class. Surely they were just a myth invented by governesses to frighten children? But, yeah, correcting the rioters on their social self-construction is absolutely the right move to make right now. Everything'll flow from the use of the correct nomenclature (handed down by approved media outlets, naturally). Bat, Bean, Beam.
I remember / je me souviens
http://i_remember.blogspot.com/2014/09/i-remember-that-one-day-there-were.html
I remember / je me souviens. For those limbic bursts of nostalgia, invented by Proust, miniaturized by Nicholson Baker, and freeze-dried by Joe Brainard in his I remember. And by Georges Perec in his Je me souviens. But there are no fractions, the world is an integer. Like us, and like us it can neither stand wholly apart nor disappear. When one is young it seems like a very strange and safe place,. But now that I have changed it feels merely odd, cold. And full of interest. John Ashbery, "A Wave". Old N...

Head of the Harbour. A place to ponder. Monday, May 13, 2013. At Cass, heading for the hills. Train about to enter Otira tunnel. Now for a rubber fix. May 14, 2013 at 6:01 PM. What a fantastic shot of the black centre line creeping across the single point perspective bridge! Glorious day and no one in sight . Thankyou for sharing :). May 15, 2013 at 5:09 AM. The shadows were a real feature. I forgot to add we saw a trout and lots of salmon - a guy pointed then out just above the Mt White Bridge. I live i...

Wednesday, March 14, 2018. A city is sculpted by time, by the movements of people, by changes in labour relations and the economic base of the community. And it is sculpted by social relations in all their forms, including political relations, which are governed but not completely determined by those other factors. In Wellington, as of last week, we can access this particular layer of the city’s history thanks to the Walking Radical Wellington. 8211; is now a Sunglass Hut, but only more or less. The auth...
