Remembering My Fallen Ancestors. My family has been lucky not to experience the loss of a soldier, sailor or marine since the days of the Civil War, though many have since fought for our country. Since Memorial Day evolved from the Civil War, it seems fitting to remember those ancestors today. Many other ancestors have fought in our country's wars, but have been lucky to survive. Today we give thanks to those men and women, though it feels that no number of "thanks" will ever be enough. Links to this post.

Origins of a Letter. A few years ago, I received a copy of an article that transcribed a letter written by Frank E Leaphart, my 3rd Great-Grandfather and a Civil War soldier. It was unclear where the article was published - a book, a magazine? Or where the original letter was stored - an archive, by an individual? Or if there was any information in the publication aside from the letter. I've been trying to find the origins of the letter ever since receiving it. That's potentially a lot of issues to purch...

A Headstone For Ruby. I want to reach out to my Albea / Waters family to help me fulfill a promise that mom and I made to Grandmama. My mom, also named Ruby, promised to one day place a headstone on her namesakes' grave. It's been ten years since then, and it's time to do something to fullfill that promise. Click here to donate. If you can't do it now, that's fine. I have set the goal at three months and hope everyone can pitch in a bit. Monday, March 31, 2014. Links to this post. Tuesday, March 25, 2014.

The War of 1812 at the Georgia Archives. Last weekend I attended a symposium on the War of 1812 hosted at the Georgia Archives, along with some of my fellow DAR ladies. First off, a shout out to the Friends of the Georgia Archives. One of the main reason I went was to find out how I could find out more about my ancestors and their participation in the war. The Archives staff gave an overview of the resources that they hold that would be of interest to genealogists. GA Military Affairs, 1775-1842. Thanks ...

Finding PawPaw's CCC Camp. A few years ago, I obtained my PawPaw's Civilian Conservation Corps records. They indicated that he, Thomas Craft, served at Camp SP-3 at Albemarle, North Carolina. The records gave me a lot of information about him, but not much about the location where he served. I've searched on and off for more information, but tonight I must have finally done something right. Camp scenes begin at the 3 minute mark. Saturday, May 31, 2014. Links to this post. Thanks Lewis, for living to an elderly age. Not that you didn't accomplish a whole lot in your life, but I appreciate that you lived long enough to be enumerated on the 1840 census. You provided me with an ancestor that utilized the "Revolutionary War Pension" and exact "age" column. Of course, if I'd skipped page two, I never would have seen that little fact anyway. There's so much information that can be found on the 2nd page of many documents. Unfortunately it's often not clear that there is. Thank yo...

Don't Go Over the River, But Do Go Through the Woods. Earlier this month, my cousin posted a photo of a Craft cemetery to Facebook. I asked about it and, though it was out in the middle of the woods in Elbert County, Georgia, it was a different cemetery. However, he was able to ask around and he found a lady who knew where the grave was. He went out to find it, then took me out to see it today. Standing at the grave, you could see water through the trees on two sides. We trekked a bit further and fou...

Adding Ancestors to the Database. I joined the Daughters of the American Revolution for the genealogy - it is a lineage society, after all. In joining, I utilized their Ancestor Database. To find Revolutionary War Patriots to join through. I also pursued their Descendants Database. Which is made up of the other generations of ancestors that have been documented to reach the Patriots. For the most part, the DAR database is well documented (and if it's not, there's usually a notation). Links to this post.

Veganism as a World View. Once upon a time in a previous life I was a right-wing-conservative-christian-meat-loving kid.
