Birding About: Madeira - Day 4
http://birdingabout.blogspot.com/2007/10/madeira-day-4.html
Birding and wildlife watching - about the place, many places in fact. Sunday, 7 October 2007. Madeira - Day 4. Day four and we decided to walk into Funchal. Along the seafront and then to take the cable car up to the tropical gardens. At a guess I'd. Due their size and behaviour but it was my first attempt and I'm. Not confident enough in what I say to be certain. (On our last day we 'sea-watched' a large school of dolphins which was an unexpected bonus! I have managed thus far:. This trip was truly horr...

Birding and wildlife watching - about the place, many places in fact. Sunday, 7 October 2007. Madeira - Day 6. For our last day in Madeira we decided on a short walk close to the hotel before packing up. We came across a large group of (Atlantic) Canaries. Just before the wine shop to which we were headed:. I'm not sure if I'll go back to Madeira. If I did I'd go in late April probably, to take in the breeding sea-birds, having pre. Booked ferry tickets for Porto Santos and a day trip out to the Ihlas.

Birding and wildlife watching - about the place, many places in fact. Sunday, 7 October 2007. Madeira - Day 5. Day 5 and first stop, the pond! Five) were drenched and ruffled but the rising water did interest them:. Once the rain had stopped more birds emerged, including this Grey Wagtail,. Again a variation local to the island:. Also the Common Waxbills. Put in a brief but noisy appearance:. From the pond we headed inland and up to Rabacal. It was drizzling at Rabacal. And the light was very poor so no ...

http://birdingabout.blogspot.com/2007_07_01_archive.html
Birding and wildlife watching - about the place, many places in fact. Friday, 6 July 2007. Our next scheduled trip abroad is to Madeira in October so pop back then for another (fingers crossed) journey into a new landscape populated with abundant wildlife and birdlife! We'd go sooner but work and the need to pay for these trips keeps getting in the way. Wednesday, 4 July 2007. Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. The very last stage of our holiday was a return trip to Las. The white line at the base of the ro...

http://birdingabout.blogspot.com/2007/10/madeira-day-2.html
Birding and wildlife watching - about the place, many places in fact. Sunday, 7 October 2007. Madeira - Day 2. Our second day in Madeira and we planned to get out into the island and start to work our way through the recommended birding locations. One of the most accessible (it's at sea level! Locations is a little pool, behind a cafe and bank as you head from Ponta. Do Sol to Madalena do Mar. This is home to a large collection of 'wild' Muscovy Ducks and it turned out a number of other birds too. As you...

Garden Birds and other sightings...: June 2006
http://gardenbirder.blogspot.com/2006_06_01_archive.html
Garden Birds and other sightings. Friday, June 16, 2006. The Garden in June. June is seen as a quiet time for birding (I gather) as all of the spring migrants have arrived and the autumn migrants have yet to leave. The adult birds' colours are fading as the summer progresses, as you can see on this Great Tit. However some birds retain strong colours even at this time of year, as this Goldfinch. More interesting for me is the proliferation of young birds in the garden, including this young Goldfinch.

Garden Birds and other sightings. Tuesday, March 21, 2006. After a long winter in the UK we decided we needed a 'winter sun' break so headed to Gran Canaria for a week, an island not famed for it's wildlife. Gran Canaria although off the African coast is a Spanish Territory so the birds count as European sightings :). Where else to start but with the Canary. I snapped this bird while on an Island tour - the only cloudy day of the week. Posted by Michael at 8:55 am. Links to this post. A pair of pink bird...

http://gardenbirder.blogspot.com/2006_09_01_archive.html
Garden Birds and other sightings. Sunday, September 24, 2006. Cornwall Holiday - Day Nine. Saturday was the last day of our holiday and we really wanted to have another go at finding an unusual migrant, so headed down to Rame Head. We were probably too late in the day (around 9:30am) as there was very little about. However this Common Buzzard was flying around calling very distinctly, and was joined by a second, we watched them for around fifteen minutes gliding around overhead:. We didn't go into the ho...

http://gardenbirder.blogspot.com/2006_07_01_archive.html
Garden Birds and other sightings. Thursday, July 20, 2006. July is the quietest month in the birding calendar. Some birds have already started their outward migration from the UK, others are beginning their autumn moult, youngsters are getting thier final 'life' lessons from parents. S on the causeway didn't appreciate us walking past:. I am very pleased with this snap of a Common Tern. Finally we had an unusual visitor to our garden, a Rock Dove. Posted by Michael at 5:49 pm. Garden Birds and other sightings...: April 2006
http://gardenbirder.blogspot.com/2006_04_01_archive.html
Garden Birds and other sightings. Friday, April 28, 2006. I completed my digiscoping kit today and took my first snap of this House Sparrow bathing in the bird bath in my garden. It's a little out of focus but has highlighted to me what I can achieve in the coming months and years with a little patience! As we hope this will have a significant benefit for the local birds in terms of habitat and food stocks, over the coming years. Posted by Michael at 2:57 pm. Links to this post. http://gardenbirder.blogspot.com/2006_02_01_archive.html
Garden Birds and other sightings. Thursday, February 23, 2006. Today in the Garden. A grey weather day with rain and snow, not affected the numbers though, so far and this is before lunch, we've had:. At least 14 Reed Buntings. And a new one - a Tree Sparrow! I was unable to get a photo without disturbing all the birds though :(. Posted by Michael at 12:37 pm. Links to this post. Northampton, United Kingdom. View my complete profile. Garden Birds and other sightings. Sunday, February 18, 2007. Sat in the conservatory reading and listening to the birds singing - a pleasant Saturday morning. Suddenly it all went very quiet except for the occasional tweet from a Blue Tit. Then I noticed something unusual sat just above the peanut feeder and ran to grab my camera:. Was sat there, I guess hoping the smaller birds would forget she was there, waiting. Posted by Michael at 5:42 pm. Links to this post. Thursday, February 08, 2007. We have bee...

Garden Birds and other sightings. Wednesday, November 01, 2006. The Hedgerow Project - Part 2. Is this the first day of Autumn? It is certainly now cold enough! The order for the plants is in, we used the hedge specialists Buckingham Nurseries ( http:/ www.hedging.co.uk/. It does all look a bit bare now and exposed so fingers crossed the plants arrive soon! The right-hand section between the shed and the bird feeding area:. Posted by Michael at 10:52 am. Links to this post. Northampton, United Kingdom.
Garden Birds and other sightings...: December 2006
http://gardenbirder.blogspot.com/2006_12_01_archive.html
Garden Birds and other sightings. Saturday, December 30, 2006. The male has the black beak and black bum:. One duck did catch my eye, as it was unfamiliar. Closer inspection showed this to be an adult female Red-Crested Pochard. From Ravenshtorpe we drove to Hollowell. This reservoir had a better feel to it, probably as there were very few humans about and with the storm coming in had quite an eerie aspect. En route we spotted these male Goldeneyes. http://gardenbirder.blogspot.com/2007_01_01_archive.html
Garden Birds and other sightings. Sunday, January 28, 2007. Saturday morning saw us going round the public loop of Pitsford Reservoir, another 7.5mile walk. We'd seen county reports of a Red-throated Diver and as spotting it would be a first we set off full of enthusiasm. No such luck! There were a lot of boats on the water which I guess would have disturbed it. Chances are it relocated to the nature reserve side instead but you never know unless you look! On the way round we found a pair of Stonechat.

First Birding Day in Ten Days. Took a bunch of shots of the Thick-billed and they were all crappy. I wanted to put one up, so I took the best of the worst and sharpened and highlighted. My Barra de Navidad list is near the top of the blog under 'Pages' for anyone who wants to see possibilities for the area. I have not even taken a panga or dinghy trip to the end of the lagoon- that would be an interesting day. Links to this post. The closest I could come was Montezuma's Cattleheart (. Thursday, 18 August 2011. 3 Whimbrel flew in which was nice, there was a discussion about these as well as someone thought they were Curlew but I'm sticking with my initial ID of Whimbrel. Also on the pond I came across 3 oddities, I think they might be Pochard but any correction greatly received. Wednesday, 17 August 2011. 1/2 hour at Druridge. Saturday, 13 August 2011. Wednesday, June 6, 2012. Blue cranes in the Graaff-Reinet district. This article was written on July 16, 2005. (To see the images larger, please press shift and left click.). Karoo splendour. The view from our accommodation on the farm, Groenvlei. The air was perfectly still, the mid-winter sky a cloudless blue. Then we heard it: a clucking, chuckling sound, coming from the heavens. My photos of Graaff-Reinet have also disappeared. This drawing of Retief House Museum I did in the 1980s. A pied starling (...
