Chronicling my build of a mineral oil-submerged and cooled PC. Stuff I’ve Learned, Vol. 3. The mineral oil PC is dead. To be clear: the PC was running just fine and would have continued to do so had I been able to properly engineer and support it. The problem wasn’t with the PC itself, though, it was with the execution of an idea. Here’s what I’ve learned:. Since I have no hood on this aquarium, sometime during the last couple of months a house fly flew/fell into the mineral oil tank and died. Now I ...

Chronicling my build of a mineral oil-submerged and cooled PC. Stay Cool, Bro. After I got the computer running I checked out the temperatures and was mildly disappointed. I mentioned this in my previous post. It seemed at the time that having the mineral oil constantly cycling through the radiator would provide cooling benefits but I was wrong. After all, what piece of equipment have you ever seen that has a radiator without a fan? Anyway, after mounting the fan on the radiator I was astonished at how m...

Computing within Limits: Visions of computing beyond Moore’s law. An LIMITS workshop at ICT4S 2016. Doesn’t work out and we instead have to think about. Tomlinson et al. 2012)? What if we will come up against various ecological, material, energetic, and/or societal limits (c.f. Thursday, 17 January 2008. Reading and writing ntfs on Mac OS X. An external hard drive always comes in handy. Most of the time, such hard drives are formatted with the FAT32 filesystem. Most of the time that works well. A big advantage is that all operating systems can read and write such a filesystem. A big disadvantage is the fact that the maximum file size is 4 GiB. That makes storing big DVD images on a FAT32 drive troublesome. 160;and NTFS-3G 1.1120-stable-catacombae.dmg. Tuesday, 15 January 2008.
