An old post that never got published:. We began our poetry unit today, of course by reading Seven at the Golden Shovel by Gwendolyn Brooks. You might know the poem:. We real cool. We. Left school. We. Strike straight. We. Lurk late. We. Sing sin. We. Thin Gin. We. Jazz June. We. Under my bed was a dressbox.

Dispatches from middle school. Read here about my experience teaching 7th, 8th, and 9th grade english in an Oakland charter school. Friday, March 30, 2007. So much has changed. I was actually going to write an entry on tuesday, which was our school climate day which means there were assembles and we taught these pre-written climate lessons. when i say pre-written i mean written by the committee that i'm on, so i wrote one of them which lot of teachers told me went well. Let that be a comment on…. Archive for September 2011. Below is the grade distribution for my latest quiz:. It was a simple quiz: 24 questions over four functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) with positive and negative single-digit integers. No twists, no curveballs — just stuff like. And, as you can see, scores are pretty abysmal. 72 kids missed. Or more problems. Only 21 students, less than a full class, missed two or less. And there were only 24 problems. Not be able to do them.

Let that be a comment on…. Here’s a scary thought: if I were able to travel back in time and tell myself three years ago what I now know about education and teaching, three-years-ago-me. Wouldn’t believe what I was saying. And it’s not just that he wouldn’t believe it but that he wouldn’t listen to it. Because his mind was already made up. See, three years ago, I thought I knew what I was getting myself into: “I’ve watched teachers do their jobs for. Wouldn’t be like them. I’d be. Answers were right, pre...

Let that be a comment on…. Okay, look, WordPress. I’ve been staring at you for the last half hour and we’re getting nowhere. The honest truth is that this job is fucking bumming me out. And that scares me. Because I really like it. Or liked it. I’m not really sure right now. It’s hard to compare things to last year when the comparison’s so apples to space shuttles. The fantasies of a desk job have started creeping up again. At desk jobs you can go to the bathroom whenever you like! At desk jobs the copie...

Let that be a comment on…. Archive for October 2011. 8230;and Michael you would fall…. It’s like Jenga. You’ve got a tower of rows of wooden blocks, and the game is played by sliding out the bricks from the middle and placing them on the top. The tower gets higher, yes, but it also gets more structurally unsound. There’s less support to hold things up. And the higher you build, the more you take away from your foundation.
