Foodie-bia: March 2011
http://foodiebia.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html
A Foodie Surviving Life in Suburbia. Monday, March 28, 2011. One minute I'm fine, and the next I'm in pieces. We had to say goodbye to our sweet Maddie on Friday. I alternate between dwelling on the good times and bemoaning the difficult end. I can only be grateful she had 13.5 years on this earth to make everyone around her so happy. Goodbye, sweet girl. We will never forget you. Friday, March 25, 2011. I have a big thing. Got rave reviews from everyone, and it has proven to be a great read so far. ...

A Foodie Surviving Life in Suburbia. Sunday, July 31, 2011. Last weekend I took a lengthy - 45 minute - flight down to the City of Angels to visit Heather. Angie came all the way from Virginia and we had a great girls' weekend together. A girls' weekend where we each had to memorialize every moment on our iPhones. (Helloooooo Instagram! Occasionally I even remembered to take out my real camera to snap a few photos. At least there was ice cream in Huntington Beach! Hope to see you soon, Heather and Angie!

A Foodie Surviving Life in Suburbia. Foodiebia = Foodie Suburbia. NYC made me appreciate food in a new way, but moving to suburbia made me realize that in order to eat well, I needed to get into the kitchen. Growing up my mom always used the word "foodie" to describe me and my dad. This was before the word developed a stigma. Before people who really. I started reading about food. Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. And In Defense of Food. Well, New York will do that to you. When John got the job at Google, ...

A Foodie Surviving Life in Suburbia. Monday, February 28, 2011. My Home Away From Home. As soon as I get to my hotel room or the equivalent when I'm on vacation, I need to unpack. It's a compulsive thing, and I'm a bit antsy until I can get every last item out from the crevices of my Samsonite. I didn't even realize I did this until I started vacationing with John and he started to laugh at my desire to unpack as soon as we entered our room. Most people don't do that? Labels: its all about me. As for thi...

A Foodie Surviving Life in Suburbia. Wednesday, August 31, 2011. Polenta with Fresh Corn and Mascarpone Cheese. I carry a big purse. It's not giant, but it is pretty sizable. I'm not sure I could ever go back to the tiny purses I used to carry even if that becomes the fashion again. Once you go big, you can't go back. Where else would I keep my iPhone, Blackberry, huge wallet, millions of receipts, Softlips, DSLR (occasionally), and my moleskin food notebook. What? The corn kernels are the first to hop i...

Living in Langley - Notes from an Island. Sunday, July 1, 2012. It's fun to experiment with all the different types of pesto. Last year I made 'nesto' - pesto from nettles. Lucky (or not) for me, there is no nettle shortage here! 1/4 cup pine nuts. 2 Tablespoons fresh thyme. 2 Tablespoons nutritional yeast. 1/4 cup olive oil. 1 Tablespoon lemon juice. In a food processor with steel blade, process the nuts and the garlic until it's all crumbly. It will smell super garlicky and yummy. Then add the ...This ...

Living in Langley - Notes from an Island. Sunday, March 3, 2013. Not Just A Pretty Face. I adore all things British. I came out as an Anglophile many years ago, back in the Princess Di days. My Christmas china is from England. My stove and pots and pans are from England. I even went there once. (Well, my plane touched down at Heathrow briefly en route to Italy. Does that count? But here he was looking out at me from the cover of his latest book, Cook with Jamie, My Guide to Making You a Better Cook.
Living in Langley - Notes from an Island: October 2011
http://livinginlangley.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html
Living in Langley - Notes from an Island. Tuesday, October 25, 2011. I started this post over a year ago. This is actually a party we threw in the spring of 2010. But I never got around to finishing it and since I can't remember any other details of the evening, I'm just going to post as is! And try to be better about completing my drafts in the future. I also made a floral arrangement using pages from an old book wrapped around the vase, as well as leaves made from pages from the same book. Pat into 2 o...

http://livinginlangley.blogspot.com/2012/06/art-of-pie.html
Living in Langley - Notes from an Island. Thursday, June 7, 2012. Art of the Pie. A couple years ago I had the opportunity to hear Kate McDermott. From Art of the Pie. Speak at a Foodportunity. Event Ever since, I've been wanting to take one of her pie workshops. That's me second from the left. I didn't bake up my pie that day. I wanted to bring it home and freeze it for a cooking with fruit class I was teaching at Whidbey Gardening Workshop. So I'm not going to post the entire crust recipe. But go slowl...
Living in Langley - Notes from an Island: November 2011

Living in Langley - Notes from an Island. Wednesday, November 16, 2011. I Do" Love Chocolate Apple Cake! Holidays often revolve around traditions and traditions often revolve around food. We always went to Aunt Chrissy's house for Christmas while I was growing up. Lots of family and lots of food. That's all the tradition I really need. (Although I do really like family traditions.). My sister gave me the little kissing angels on top of the cake. I still have them and put them out every Christmas. 2 mediu...

Living in Langley - Notes from an Island. Wednesday, February 22, 2012. Any Way You Slice It. For quite some time, I've been wanting to have a pizza party. Some friends were coming to visit last weekend, and this seemed like the perfect excuse! I sent out the invites via an email attachment. I love clip art. I then headed down to Archie McPhee. In Seattle to pick up some fake mustaches for everyone to wear. Jim and I argued over who would get to wear it. Can you tell who won? At much higher temps, 800 &#...
Living in Langley - Notes from an Island: January 2012
http://livinginlangley.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html
Living in Langley - Notes from an Island. Wednesday, January 25, 2012. Earlier in 2011 we found out we were going to be grandparents. Of course I had to plan a baby shower for the mom-to-be, and of course it had to be book-themed. One of my cousins had given my younger sister a book shower when Jan was pregnant, and it was the best, most fun baby shower I've ever been to. And a theme was born! Safari stuff was in all the stores last year, so I slowly gathered things to use as decor at the shower, knowing...

Living in Langley - Notes from an Island. Monday, May 28, 2012. Potato Casserole, Eenie Meenie Style, Grilled Asparagus and Pumpkin Pie. One more barbecue to wrap up the Memorial Weekend. We had two New York steaks to grill, plus some asparagus. I had intended to do a potato recipe I've been wanting to try, but then I read about Eenie Meenie's (aka Rebecca) potatoes. Here is how to make the potatoes in Eenie's own words:. Top with several pats of butter, then top with foil. Bake at around 350 or so f...

Gastro Friendly Weekend Excursions. Los Angeles/Greater Southern California. My first trip to Oklahoma City for the Big 12 Women’s Basketball Tournament did not disappoint. We had THREE full days to explore everything OKC has to offer! While, OKC, was once an industrial leader, many of its streets are now desolate and we can’t seem to find the people! Every day, we started our day with a run through the city. We explored the Bricktown Riverwalk. Which was bustling with everyone from cyclists post-ride to...

Back in the saddle. Long time no see. A lot of changes since my last post back in October. I was struggling with some obsessive thoughts/behaviors concerning my food intake at the time, and I feel like I’ve got a much better grip on things now. And by grip, I mean the opposite of a literal grip. More like vaguely wiggly spirit fingers. Loosey-goosey. That kinda thing. I’ll be using the rather poorly-named, yet extremely reasonable website fatsecret.com. And we’re off…. Mindfulness vs. Obsession. In a way...

A Foodie Surviving Life in Suburbia. Monday, January 23, 2012. The Big News and a New Blog. You've probably noticed I've been a little absent from the blog lately. This was partially due to increased hours at work, but probably more tied to the fact that I hate cooking, pictures of food, and thinking about food right now. Luckily, there is a good reason for my change in heart (or, rather, stomach), and that's because I'm 12 weeks pregnant! Labels: its all about me. Monday, January 9, 2012. We had quite a...
