What I didn't expect. Last year my daughter and I came up with the idea of raising chickens in our backyard. After a little discussion and a lot of research we were well on our way. Our goal is to raise our chickens for eggs. This is a journal of our experience and learning. April 8, 2010. Purchased our first two day old chicks. (Black Cochins). April 17, 2010. Purchased 2 more day old chicks (1 Buff Orpington and 1 Plymouth Rock). May 16, 2010. Finished chicken coop and moved chickens outside.

Meet the Chickens - The Thompson's Chickens

What I didn't expect. Percy is an energetic and precocious Buff Orpington pullet (hen) who is about 9 weeks old. Although she was "bullied" as a baby, she teases her flock and can be quite rough (but playful). As a Buff Orpington, Percy is a cold hardy chicken and soon to be egg layer. When Percy is about 22 weeks old, she will lay white eggs.

What I didn't expect. We checked out a many books as we could find on chickens. I found a few that really helped us get started. The are listed below. Damerow, Gail. I used Google Sketch to draw up the plans for the coop. I have included those plans in the chicken coop part of this web site.
