Hobbling Helly’s Weblog. Ramblings of a girl with Hip Dysplasia awaiting PAO. It’s been a while. Too much too soon. Ahh it was all going well. getting rid of the crutches for short distances, even some longer hobbles, (or wobbles as I currently walk with a certain weebleness about me! I’ve tried massaging, stretching, heat, ice and painkillers, oh and some rest which seems to be the best medicine, but doesn’t work as quickly as I want it to! Should I have crutches any more? Since I last posted things have been busier, more sleep deprived and a lot of fun. Over 16 months ago now (and yes time flies at a rate of knots you never thought possible) our beautiful little girl arrived in the world. Now I could bang on about the experience of babies; the good, the bad and the smelly but this is a hip dysplasia blog so I will resist.

Yesterday I finally had my screws removed – unfortunately I wasn’t allowed to keep them, but I did get to see them – they were pretty darn big! Pain wise things feel fine, the area around the incision is a little tender, I have some nice bruising but that at the minute is about all. Oh and I’ m obviously swollen, which gives me a slightly one sided muffin top! But it’s a look I can work with. Next Post ».

Things my bilateral PAOs can do now (encouragement for those at the beginning of their hip journey):. 1 Skate in 3 holiday ice shows - not to mention all of the practices - with my friends who have normal hips. 2 Hydroblades (see photo above). 3 Walk through the mall with heavy bags. 4 Hike in the Japanese garden. 5 Run after my cat. 6 Clean the entire house. 7 Stand while cooking an entire meal. What's the Hip Fix?

Long walks on the beach have helped build my walking ability although I'm still not going to be running any marathons. Flexibility is still an issue, but that's old news.
