Kitchen Alchemy: Sharp edges on big cakes

http://kitchenalchemy.blogspot.com/2015/05/sharp-edges-on-big-cakes.html

Sunday, May 17, 2015. Sharp edges on big cakes. So what have I been doing all this time? It's not for the feint hearted. Ganache must have been set for a day to attempt this technique. But it works! As you can see from this bee themed cake. So what's the trick? You prepare you ganache layer as normal, making sure you get the top level and the edges sharp. Here's what mine looks like when I'm satisfied with the finish. Flip the cake and put it on the bench. Smooth the excess fondant skirt upwards so t...

Kitchen Alchemy: Chocolate Caramel Slice

http://kitchenalchemy.blogspot.com/2011/08/chocolate-caramel-slice.html

Saturday, August 13, 2011. I've made some revisions of Chocolate Caramel Slice, and I have to say I'm pretty happy with the result. One important note: the quality of your slice hinges on your choice of chocolate for the top. If you choose a cheap chocolate, you'll get a very ordinary result. Try and choose cooking couveture that has at 70% cocoa content - your slice will be so much better for it. 1 cup self raising flour. 1 cup desicated coconut. 1 cup brown sugar. 125g butter, melted. 8 Pour the chocol...

Kitchen Alchemy: Royal icing for sugar cookies Pt2

http://kitchenalchemy.blogspot.com/2015/05/royal-icing-for-sugar-cookies-pt2.html

Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Royal icing for sugar cookies Pt2. Okay, so you've got your cookies, you've got your flood icing. Now what? So choose your colours and decant about 200ml of icing into three small mixing bowls. I use ramekins. Add a few drops of colour to each bowl, reserve the icing left in the main bowl for your white supply. I try to stick to four colours per cookie project including white. But there's nothing to stop you from doing more if you have the inclination. If you want to do a wet on we...

Kitchen Alchemy: Royal icing for sugar cookies Pt1

http://kitchenalchemy.blogspot.com/2015/05/royal-icing-for-sugar-cookies-pt-1.html

Monday, May 18, 2015. Royal icing for sugar cookies Pt1. If you read my sugar cookies post earlier this week, you're probably waiting with baited breath for the icing recipe. The good news is resting your cookies for one or two days is really good for laying down icing. It gives the butter a chance to drop and reduces the risk of grease absorbing into your icing and discolouring the final finish. You will be shocked, no doubt, when I tell you my royal icing is made out of Pavlova Magic! 2/3 cup warm water.

Our European Holiday: The carnival is over

http://oureuropeanholiday.blogspot.com/2007/07/carnival-is-over.html

Mark and Pet's 2007 adventures through Thailand, England, Wales, France and Spain. Monday, July 2, 2007. The carnival is over. We are back in Australia and reinstalled in our Woollahra apartment, but packing up to move to sunny Randwick. Might I say it's more than a tad depressing! It would be very nice to still be wandering the streets of London, although we are very sorry to hear about the attempted car bombings. While must people be so cruel? Our European Holiday: A brief review of holiday liquor

http://oureuropeanholiday.blogspot.com/2007/06/brief-review-of-holiday-liquor.html

Mark and Pet's 2007 adventures through Thailand, England, Wales, France and Spain. Thursday, June 28, 2007. A brief review of holiday liquor. In Thailand, I recommend drinking Singha beer. Pet didn't like it that much but I thought it was grand. Cool and crisp and thailicious. In England, Carling's been my beer of choice. I've opted for pints, which have served me quite nicely. The first beer I ordered in France was a Leffe Blonde. "Une Leffe! June 29, 2007 at 12:24 PM. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

The Flavors of Life: Slow Cooker Green Beans

http://flvrsoflife.blogspot.com/2011/03/slow-cooker-green-beans.html

Friday, March 18, 2011. Slow Cooker Green Beans. I've been asked, begged, and even TOLD to make a post with my recipe for real, authentic, Southern green beans. While I have no written exact measurments I'm going to put up a general how to on making them so you can all sort of make it your own. :). Roughly 1lbs Fresh green beans with the ends trimmed off (I snap em off by hand and it may be a down right pain in your rear end as it's time consuming but it's worth the effort TRUST ME! How to do it:. I'm a ...

http://oureuropeanholiday.blogspot.com/2007_05_01_archive.html

Mark and Pet's 2007 adventures through Thailand, England, Wales, France and Spain. Thursday, May 31, 2007. And now a word from our sponsor. Alright, so I'm not actually our sponsor, but I thought it was a catchy intro and it was high time I contributed to this blog. After counting down the days for nigh on 4 months I'm now finally counting down the hours (silently, in my head, so that I don't drive Pet insane). I've packed my bags, had a shave and a pedicure and now I'm good to go. Today is the day.

The Flavors of Life: February 2010

http://flvrsoflife.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

Friday, February 26, 2010. 1/3-1/2 cup of Yellow Corn Meal (depends on how much filler you like and you can use italian bread crumbs instead). 1 can of white crab meat. 1 can of Bumble Bee boneless skinless pink salmon. Pinch each of salt and pepper. 1 tsp dried basil. 1 tsp celery seed. 1 tsp onion powdery. 1/2 tsp of garlic powder (or 1/4 tsp minced garlic). I just combined everything in a bowl, mixed it with a spoon. Then spooned the mixture into my hand. As well as some pics of other things. This has...

The Flavors of Life: January 2010

Sunday, January 31, 2010. 3 slices of STALE bread (the stale is important ;). 1 tsp vanilla extract. 2 tbsp heavy cream. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat with just a small amount of butter (you can skip the butter if you have a nonstick surface). Some things I like to use for my french toast are as follows:. My whipped topping recipe that's posted. Nutella (put it between 2 slices SOOOOOO good). Drizzled with hot fudge. Whipped Mascarpone and Cream Cheese topping. 4oz Whipped Cream Cheese (I ju...

The Flavors of Life: Drunken Shrimp

http://flvrsoflife.blogspot.com/2010/08/drunken-shrimp.html

Thursday, August 5, 2010. This is one of my favorite ways to make shrimp. It's a quick and easy marinade and all you have to do is let them soak for approximately 1-2 hours in the fridge then skewer and grill. 2lbs raw shrimp (I buy them with the shell on but I deshell them and devein them). 1/4-1/2 cup sugar (depends on how sweet you want it). 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lime juice. 1tbsp chopped cilantro (I couldn't find fresh so I used some dried). Mark and Pet's 2007 adventures through Thailand, England, Wales, France and Spain. Tuesday, July 3, 2007. La Pedrera - Barcelona. This is a shot of the front of La Pedrera, an apartment building that Gaudi was asked to design, which showed the growing consumerism of Barcelona in the 1920s. One apartment is on display and is decorated with genuine 1920s furniture, although it is not the exact furniture used at the time. This is a light fitting in the hallway. Monday, July 2, 2007. The Flavors of Life: December 2009

http://flvrsoflife.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html

Wednesday, December 30, 2009. Quick and Easy Lunch. It's been roughly 8 or 9 years since I've made some of the easy and cheap meals from my childhood. I decided to break out the old recipe I came up with for Cheesy Taco Skillet today for lunch. It's much like the Hamburger Helper one but from scratch! It turned out so amazingly well and was SOOOOOO delicious! 2 bags of boil in bag rice. 1 package taco seasoning. 1 cup water (use this and NOT the amount on the package as you need more sauce for the rice).

The Flavors of Life: Momma's Spiced Pumpkin Cookies

http://flvrsoflife.blogspot.com/2010/08/mommas-spiced-pumpkin-cookies.html

Monday, August 2, 2010. Momma's Spiced Pumpkin Cookies. These are a favorite of mine any time of the year but my fondest memories of them come from the fall. My mom would always bake these for us constantly between Halloween and Christmas. 2 1/4 cups all purpose flour. 1 teaspoon baking powder. 1/2 teaspoon baking soda. 1 cup butter or margerine, softened (I use salted sweet cream butter out of personal preference but my mom use to use the butter flavored margarine). 1 cup white sugar. Feel free to play ...

Kitchen Alchemist | "Baking is Science for Hungry People" -J. Jacques

Baking is Science for Hungry People -J. Jacques. It’s been quite a long time. But here I am, back with new recipes! My grandmother used to make a phenomenal plum pie – the inspiration for my current recipe. Like all aspiring baking bloggers, I take inspiration where I find it – often from the internet. The crust today comes from David Lebovitz. The filling is a hodge podge of ideas from Martha Stewart, Allrecipes, and what I was able to find in my kitchen cupboards…. 6 1/3 Tbsp unsalted butter. Arrange s...

Kitchen Alchemy

Monday, September 19, 2016. When my son requested a space party for his birthday this year, I rubbed my hands together with glee - finally I had an excuse to buy some cool tools from the Evil Cake Genius. My grand idea for a cake was something that looked like Jupiter. I had seen a hand painted one on Pinterest, and I wondered whether I could create a similar effect with swirling fondant. So I ordered the hemisphere baking tin and spherical cake combs. It was obvious very quickly that my sphere was too s...
