Let's learn about what it takes to build games! February 03, 2016. Tropes, Clichés and Formula Part 2. Ldquo;Don’t avoid the clichés - they are clichés because they work! I’m going disagree with Mr. Lucas up there in the one area of terminology (my previous post should fill in you in on how I define cliché), but I fully agree with his intent. An artist shouldn’t shy away from something only because it’s been a proven success. But a formula, like tropes, is only bad if it becomes cliché. The ge...You know...

And who might we be, asked the inquisitive young game designer in the audience? Well I’m glad someone asked, or else I’d feel kind of silly explaining it to you. He aims to cover many topics here: Entry level How-To articles, interesting research he’s found, theories about game design or even the history of the games industry. Next, AJ Howard, our b...

Let's learn about what it takes to build games! December 08, 2015. To kick things off I figured I’d do a little introduction piece for you readers to use as a lens while looking at my future posts. That way when I make some crazy hypothesis about player types or the accessibility of certain game genres, you will know this is from the guy who finds backlog spreadsheets to be pretty, which I do! So hello world, my name is Patrick Owens and I’m a Producer at Fractal Fox!

Making Games Fun

For games where a few rule changes makes all the difference! Have you ever played a board game and come away thinking "Well that looked like a fun game . too bad it wasn't"? Was it because the rules made it no fun? Was it because the game is designed so only the winner has fun? Was it because it seemed to be missing something? What if there was an alternate set of rules that actually made the game fun for everyone? That's what we are all about!
